We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Andres D. Rischer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Andres D., what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process was long. The process was allowing my mind to remove the fears and doubts that I with pursuing a new opportunity for myself. I can go back as far as 2012 to reflect on moments where signs were given to me. I pushed them away believing that I was where I was supposed to be (at that time). I was afraid to step off the original path and step onto a new one. Which by the way, was or would be still aligned to my purpose. So, I started slow. I initiated a t-shirt business. I set the intention to learn the “ins and outs” of running a business. It was not my desire to create this business to become rich or wealthy, but to lay a foundation for entrepreneurship. And it worked!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have a couple of businesses. But the one that I am mainly focused on is Math is Money. Math is Money is a financial education series designed to mentor middle and high school students about building wealth. As a former Math teacher, I was tied to teaching scripted state and national academic standards. However, as I saw my own evolution for building wealth, I recognized that the standards were not and are not designed to teach students financial literacy. Considering that I worked in urban schools, I saw this as a huge gap with preparing students to have a foundation of managing and growing their money. Therefore, I wanted to be a solution to the problem. For many of the 20 years that I worked in public school, I had a saying when teaching Math. “If you can do Math, then you can put money in your pocket!” This quote stemmed from the disappointment that students still struggled with basic Math facts when entering the sixth grade. I wanted to students to know that those basic Math facts are the skills needed to get paid. After launching my t-shirt business, I then completed the publication of my book, Lessons that I Learned from My Father and Brother. My book is not only designed to pay tribute to my dad and late brother, but it also serves as a life skill mentoring resource for youth. From there, I was then able to start a mentoring company that targets the development and success of young men. Meanwhile, Chapter 5 from my book was laying the foundation for my Math is Money curriculum. Chapter 5 talks about the lessons that I learned from my father about money. Now, it was a matter of time of looking for schools and organizations who had a desire and purpose to work with me. Another thing that I learned is that you do not have to do this alone. During the pandemic, I let go of my ego and begin to search for assistance. These individuals would help close the gap, remove the frustrations with writer’s block, marketing, publishing, networking, and budgeting. Therefore, I aligned myself with a team of experts that would guide my process and journey for being a successful entrepreneur. In closing, I want the world to know that the Power of Self Belief is real. You have to let of fear and anxiety. Trust yourself and surround yourself with others who believe in your vision. Also, know that along the way, there will be distractions. However, do not give up. Keep pushing forward and continue to learn as your. Lastly, it is okay, “to fly the plane as you build it!”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Nashville is a vibrant city where the majority of the excitement takes place downtown. I would take my best friend to the Gulch. The Gulch is filled with restaurants, live music, bars, and tourists. Some exciting places to visit include African American Music Museum, Music City Walk of Fame, Biscuit Love, and Rooftop Bar.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate this moment to all of my former students that I taught Math to from Fort Worth, Phoenix, Nashville, and Murfreesboro.
