Meet Dom Hernandez | Wedding Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dom Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dom, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
Having a business within an industry that revolves around one single day leaves how I am to be remembered on said day with a lot of pressure.
But, I gladly welcome that. When you think about all of the time, emotions, and money that couples put into their wedding day, I can only arrive on this day with enthusiasm and energy to create the best work for the couple. I mean, for some of them, it’s the most resources that they will ever spend in a given day. There’s nothing that can give you back what you’ve spent on your wedding day than all of the pictures, and in my case, film that is taken that can carry on these memories forever, and in many ways, enhance them. It’s why I view my job with the utmost importance that I do.
With that being said, the photographers and videographers have a challenging task of not continuing to pull too much from the couples on the wedding day.
You’ve seen it before and cringed to yourself or the person next you, or at the very least heard stories of someone with a camera doing a little too much to get “the shot”. And if you’re really unfortunate, the actions of a photographer and videographer ruined a precious moment of a couple’s day or became the center of attention when that role belonged to the bride and groom. That’s one reason, but a very good reason that you should spend good money to hire the right photographers and videographers for a day where every moment is immensely precious.
Over the years, I’ve been able to figure out that when it comes to capturing couples’ wedding days, there’s truly nothing more important than simply allowing the couples to be in the moment. In my opinion, capturing their genuine reactions to the day passing is better than any shot that I could stage or pose. My job is to be a fly on a wall (with a camera) on a day that is already magical on its own. When the day finally comes to an end, I can’t tell you how many couples appreciate my energy and genuine excitement for their marriage and allowing them to be present in each moment, as opposed to making it tiresome by having to do things over and over again. After shooting her wedding, a bride who also works in the wedding industry applauded my approach and told me that this style felt like, “ you(I) got everything from a magic point of view and we just got to focus on each other and live the best day ever…”.
I want to be remembered in this industry simply like that: allowing couples to be their authentic selves in front of the camera, allowing them to live the best day ever with me cheering them on behind the camera.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I bring a unique flair to all of my films through the wonder of 8MM film! There is so much nostalgia in two people’s love story, especially on their wedding day.
Likewise, every movie that is shot on actual film instantly implements that same effect and makes it 900 times better! (At least to me) That is my desire in creating films for all of my couples. I want the experience of going back to your wedding day to feel just like you’re watching your old favorite movie!
I’m going to tell it to you straight… I WANT TO MAKE EACH COUPLE CRY! And I mean that in the best way possible! We’ve all seen movies (ahem, The Notebook, 10 Things I Hate About You) where we simply can’t fight back the tears. We want the guy to get the girl, love to win and for them to kiss in the rain while the credits roll behind them. For each couple’s film, it’s just that simple; I aim to capture all of the same! Okay maybe not the rain part… but the story of them and how love has brought you two together and now leads the way!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Easy! When you come to Dallas you have to check out a cool inde movie theater like the Angelika or the Inwood theatre and stroll through deep ellum or bishop arts district for food and drinks. If you make it out to Fort Worth, my wife and I’s two go-to spots are Tines (which has some of the best mexican food in DFW), or Gemelle which has amazing food and an amazing backyard for with games and spots to hang out with friends and family!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All of the credit truly goes out to my wife for joining me on some of these wedding, giving me feedback on what I did great, what I could improve on, and for watching every single edit of mine with as much excitement that I have showing her.
