We had the good fortune of connecting with Dolores Hirschmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dolores, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Personally, I am a risk-averse adventurer, which is an oxymoron. I love to explore and get my feet wet, but I am careful not to get too wet. I have found that I am more tolerant of risk now, as I have personally evolved, than I was when I was younger and less experienced which is probably the case for most people. The more confidence I have in myself and the more trust I have in my decision making abilities, the more courage I have to play bigger and take risks. The truth is that your business will never grow if you don’t take some sort of risk. And there are two types of risk: CONSCIOUS and MANAGED risk or UNCONSCIOUS risk. The first one is strategic and requires research and planning – you don’t just fly by the seat of your pants. It has a much higher chance of resulting in a favorable outcome because you did the work and you feel confident in your decision to take on the risk. I have taken many risks in my career, some worked out and some did not. Those times when it did work out were the times when I made a conscious decision that the reward outweighed the risk. And because of those calculated and conscious risks, my business has grown exponentially!
What should our readers know about your business?
I am an entrepreneur, hispanic immigrant, mother of four, and business owner. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, I endured a difficult childhood. When I was 20, I was diagnosed with a pancreatic tumor and was told I might not make it. Well guess what? I made it! I went on to graduate from business school and meet my husband who was traveling in Buenos Aires. Within a year, we got married and moved to the US. Here, I became a mother of 4 and while they were young, I started 3 businesses: a women’s clothing company that supported a coop of low income women in Argentina, a language school where we taught Spanish, French, and Chinese as an after school program, and a consulting business. I later became a TEDx organizer as I am very passionate about IDEAS that can impact the world. And then in 2014, I launched my current adventure, Masters in Clarity, a coaching practice that helps clients clarify their idea worth sharing and implement business growth systems. Masters in Clarity was born from asking myself this question, “What would I do for free all day long?” How could I combine my skills, my experience and training, and my passion for ideas to build a business that would allow me to have an impact in the world while raising my four children? Masters in Clarity stands behind entrepreneurs who are committed to changing the world with their work. We help them communicate their idea in a clear, concise way so that people respond. My entrepreneurial journey was not always smooth. But, I quickly realized that in order to be a successful entrepreneur, you MUST be really clear on who you are, what you are meant to do, and what kind of life you want to have. Growing your business requires CLARITY of positioning, knowing exactly what problem you solve, and pacing yourself. The path to entrepreneurship is a path where you will be required to get out of your comfort zone as a human being. It is the fastest way for personal development work with a financial incentive!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places to visit in the Dallas area are the Sixth Floor Museum, the Arboretum, and the Bishop Arts District. The best places to eat would have to be Pecan Lodge and Velvet Taco. 🙂 Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always recommend the book, MAN’S SEARCH FOR MEANING by Viktor Frankl. It is a must read for all of us on our journey to living our best and most purposeful life. In my early days as an entrepreneur, this book played a major role in directing me to my true purpose in life and career.
