We had the good fortune of connecting with Divya Vasu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Divya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I draw inspiration from those who have transformed themselves and others through their passion and contribution to society. Their journeys are filled with stories of overcoming internal struggles and barriers, challenges, and discovering a strong sense of purpose.
While I was very inspired, I was plagued with self doubt and fear. Plus, I had no idea what my true passion or purpose was and where to begin. I had to get in touch with the “inner me” and find what I loved as a kid. The quote “Your passion is for you, your purpose is for others’ resonated with me.
Growing up in India, I was mesmerized by the rich and diverse cultural heritage, vibrant and expressive art forms honed through many generations. The mix of colors, patterns, texture and intricate designs sparked a lot of joy in me. I fell in love with various art infused jewelry, décor and handicrafts and wondered about how to present these timeless art & beauty beyond cultural boundaries. This would ultimately give birth to Lotus Lane Boutique.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Art has a unique ability to connect with our humanity and history. Lotus Lane was born from our ardent desire to showcase the beautiful and unparalleled creativity that the artisans of India have been quietly perfecting for centuries. The vision for our boutique is to integrate these timeless art and beauty into every aspect of our personal style and décor yet staying practical and relevant for modern times. From a very humble beginning, Lotus Lane has evolved into an exclusive online boutique that offers lovely, colorful, heart-crafted decor, jewelry, gift favors, and other personal accessories.
The local artisans play an important role in preserving and passing down their family honed skills to future generations. We have been very fortunate to work closely with artisans and small businesses that employ local artisans. Perfecting the art is their primary source of income and we couldn’t be more grateful to be in a position to generate more opportunities for them.
Every day offers something exciting – whether it is designing or curating unique products, or working with the artisans to execute the vision, or packaging and shipping them to our customers. A lot of effort goes behind the scenes. What keeps us pumped is to hear from our customers that either our wedding gift favors was loved by their guests or how our accessories and decor added color and joy to their celebrations. It brings a smile on our face.
Was it easy? Not at all! I have had to wear different hats, learn new skills and manage uncertainties. Truth be told, I have had thoughts if I can sustain the journey and at those times it has been pivotal for me to go back to “why” I am doing what I am doing and keep pushing forward. Every situation (good or bad) that has come my way has taught me the importance of staying grounded, humble and nimble.
Through this journey, I have realized that when you love what you are doing and open to learning, it makes all the stress and challenges worth every drop of sweat and tears. There is a sense of contentment when our passion and purpose align, and I am very grateful to live in alignment every day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Dallas and it has been my home for the last 14 years. My best friend and I love spending time in nature; we are both foodies – so that’s a must and needless to say, shopping!
In a week, some of the must dos in our check list would be experiencing Dallas Arborteum, kayaking at White Rock, walk/run at Katy Trail, and checking out Deep Ellum’s mural walls for Instagram worthy pictures.
As far as food goes, definitely a stop at one of my favorite restaurants, Covinos in Plano- a great family owned Italian restaurant, Whiskey Cake, Velvet Taco, some yummy Indian food at Urban Tadka and for our sugar craving, Emporium Pies in McKinney. Of course, no visit is complete without a shopping trip at North park mall and Watters Creek in Allen.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My friends and family are my biggest support. My husband is my biggest cheerleader and is always encouraging me to think big, to take bold risks and is a great sounding board for all ideas. He is by my side during the highs and the lows. Being a creative person himself, he is an integral part of the business and pours his knowledge, and efforts into to the success of Lotus Lane Boutique.
My entire family is my infinite source of motivation. Even though they are miles away, their continuous support makes me feel that they were right beside me at every step of the way. There is no way I could do what we do without their support and I am truly very grateful for that.
My friends are very supportive in more ways that I can imagine, from cheering me on to patiently listening to all challenges.
Last but not the least, a big thank you to all the Lotus Lane supporters who I consider as my extended family. I feel very humbled when they choose us to bring a piece of nostalgia to their festivities and celebrations.
