We had the good fortune of connecting with Desy Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Desy, how do you think about risk?
There’s a saying, “without risk there’s no reward.” For your business to succeed, you, the business owner have to take that chance. There have been plenty of times where I had to trust someone else advice, go back to school, rely on the assistance of others, or use my savings as a way to fund my dream and I do not regret any of it. Those risks paid off and made my business the success it is now.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Floebe Publishing started as Floebe during the 2007/2008 year. My mom forced me to read, as a way to get me away from the television. Eventually, I found myself obsessed with reading, and after reading all the books at our house, I asked my mom, if I could write a book. Thus my first ever book, “Hello my name is Floebe,” was born. I knew that I was meant to be a writer and after much rejection and a few acceptance letters, in 2013 I self-published, and Floebe Publishing was born. Of course my not knowing anything about publishing, marketing, meant the book did not do well. So I went back to school, obtain an MFA in creative writing and an MS in Digital Marketing, and in 2017, I was back, with a new look but I didn’t stop there. I didn’t want to only publish my stories, I want to assist others with writing creatively, self-publishing and editing, thus Floebe Publishing 2.0 was born. Currently I’ve published 7 short stories in the genre of paranormal romance and I have a new series, Boo! Can You See Us?, coming out in April. The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is being consistent and staying true to myself. Several times I thought about giving up on my social media channels or responding to my readers because I wasn’t seeing fast results. However, I pushed myself to stay consistent and continue the process. I’ve also stayed true to who I am as an author as well. I write the way I want to write and my readers love me for it. My consistency and me being true to myself helped me build a following on social media and a small fan base, and this is only the beginning. I want the world to know that Floebe Publishing is your one stop shop, We can help you bring your story to life, edit your social media content, publish your story and help you advertise/market your story. Floebe Publishing can do it all.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oooh I love this question. Monday, I would take them to Quiggly’s Clayhouse located in Richardson, Tx, where we would spend most of the day decorating cups for the upcoming holiday season.
Tuesday, we would catch a double feature at a drive in movie theater, Fun Movie Grill, located in Richardson, Tx.
Wednesday, we would have a little evening fun and visit the truck yard, located in Dallas, Texas. There we would enjoy the nightlife, while feasting on delicious food and drinks.
Thursday, I would take them Deep Ellum, located in Downtown, Dallas, where we would sample different restaurants and enjoy the tantalizing scenery.
Friday we would visit Vinetti’s, located in Addison, Tx and dance the night away.
Saturday we would brunch at the Biscuit Bar, located in Downtown, Dallas, and gossip about our fun week together.
Sunday would be a chill day, maybe a Nextflix Bingeathon.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout Cynfully Soul Good, When I rebranded my current business, Floebe Publishing, she was one of my first clients. She is an inspiration to African American women everywhere and I look forward to her business continue to flourish.
