We had the good fortune of connecting with Denzel Demby and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denzel, how do you think about risk?
For me taking risks does not fit my personality. I’m a meticulous individual and everything has to be planned out perfectly. I don’t care if it’s planning my day or my work week, everything had to fall into place. My desire to have my own business pushed me to take more risks. You can plan your business with a business plan, or a marketing plan but ultimately we don’t know what the future holds. Watching other well-known entertainers and entrepreneurs such as Gary Vee, Steve Jobs, Steve Madden, and Tyler Perry inspired me to think outside the box. Sometimes everyone will not see or understand your vision and that’s ok. When I was in high school, I always dreamed of attending business school and starting multiple businesses. I loved fashion and jewelry as a child and being a black young man from the south, that was not common. I had to cancel the outside noise and take a risk in my career. Making the move to Dallas was probably the biggest risk of my life. I was still in grad school and I didn’t have a plan. I just woke up one day and said I’m ready to take a leap of faith and move to Dallas. It was a risk but it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. I finished grad school, got my Masters In Business Administration. I revamped my jewelry business and website. Ultimately the risk I didn’t want to take, is the risk that changed my life for the better. For me risk-taking is now part of my life. I know that I will have more risks to take and I have peace with not knowing what the outcome will be. With the help of God I know I will end up in the right place.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a jewelry designer and content creator. I love fashion and I’m always working on new content to share with my followers and customers. Being a business graduate I have to balance being a business professional in corporate America and maintaining my creative side. What sets me apart from others is that I’m not trying to be different on purpose. I just let my creativity flow and I stay in my lane. I have a few brand partnerships that are coming in 2022. I’m also working on a few new projects and I’m expecting a busy 2022. My journey has been an experience to say the least. Building a brand from the ground up without an investor, is a long process. I’ve had nights where I would get 2 to 3 hours of sleep and then get up and go to work. After work I would attend class via zoom and work on my assignments for school. There were so many days where would I want to just sleep or throw in the towel. Even though I wanted to quit, I had to remind myself that I asked for this. Big dreams require sacrifice and discipline. I want people to know that my brands mr_demby and discern jewelry is my art and my truth. I put my heart into my brand and I want people to see that. I want people to know that it doesn’t matter where you come from or where you started. It doesn’t matter if you are qualified, God will provide the proper tools to enhance your talents and skills.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friends were visiting Dallas for a week I would take them to Legacy West in the Plano area. It’s one of the dopest spots in the Dallas area. One of my best friends that I grew up with took me there and I’ve been back almost every week since then. The dining hall is a great experience full of good vibes and good food. The second place we would go is downtown. I love Downtown Dallas and I like exploring the area. I would also take my friends to Northpark Center. NorthPark has great scenery and the environment is peaceful. Overall we would have a blast doing anything.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I would like to also give a shoutout to my family and friends for supporting my dreams. Lastly, I have to give credit to my former institutions Colin, LSUA, and LSUS. My instructors were amazing and gave me a lot of knowledge on business and leadership.
