We had the good fortune of connecting with Dee Dot Major Music and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dee Dot, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Back when I was growing up I played many different brass instruments in both middle and high school, also during that time so happen to be what many consider the “Golden Era” of hip hop in the late 90’s . I was influenced by the sound of many artists and producers from that era such as OutKast, 8 Ball & MJG & Dr Dre to name a few. During that time I wanted to create music but it wasn’t as easily available yet until the early 2000’s . I got my first program to create beats in 2006, then from there I started to meet more and more people that were also creating music and then in the process was having fun doing what I loved to do, years passed by and more opportunities came. I always looked at making music as a form of self expression and it allows me to do just that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart I think is I feel like I can make and kind of instrumental as a producer but my own style as an artist is more so that old school hip hop vibe. I was influenced by producers like Dr Dre, Alchemist & the Neptunes but I still have a little of that modern style of hip hop with a lot of 808 style drums. Lot of creating in the beginning has to do with experimenting until you find your own style and then you kind of see what people like that you create and then it takes off. I won’t say that this is easy especially if you’re involved in making music for the long haul. I’ve learned that in a creative type of field such as an artist or music producer is no one can see your vision, rarely does anyone in your circle even see what you can see or where you want to be and sometimes you’ll have to do some things on your own and maybe alone to get to places you want to get. Along the way you’ll meet new people whether they are fans, or other artists and producers to network with and you never know you might end up making music together, becoming great friends and experiencing much success together. What I want the world to know about story is, though it’s probably cliché to say I’ve always felt like the underdog and it’s what’s driven me not just in music but in sports I played and other parts of life. What I want the world to know about my brand is Major Music Entertainment started out as just my music production company where I create instrumentals for other artists , but its grown to be my own record label in addition to the home of my podcast The Major Music Lounge which I interview other music producers and artists about their creative process, new music and more. The podcast is based on my YouTube page Dee Dot Major Music page where it’s became kind of like a community of other creatives. There are not just other music creators but music production app developers, sound designers and content creators like myself and growing by the day.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a big sports fan, I love music but I love going to sporting events so we’d probably do that. The teams that I enjoy watching are both on the road in both being a Raiders fan and a Pistons fan. I have a lot of friends in both places and their are artists in both communities that I know that I wouldn’t mind making music with. If its a week long trip and while both sports are going it might be tough to go between those two places so I’d hope I could catch them while they are playing in cities close to each other.
