We had the good fortune of connecting with Daylon Furlough and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daylon, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Success is the conversation after the work is done. I believe the most important factor is that I treat people as people and not as numbers. I like to tell each company or person I work with that I’m much more interested in the relationship that’s potentially established than how much a project will cost. You get more out of a strong relationship than you do quick money. So when people think about me or my brand, they’ll see the person behind it first … who I am … what I believe in … how I communicate … how I respond etc. And if what they see, what they experience or what they hear from people I’ve worked with is positive, they won’t care about the money.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The difference in what I do at Velvet One Media is that I create moments that linger long after what you see has ended. I don’t just pick up the camera, turn it on and film some stuff. I’m always looking at how an angle or color or transition will invoke some type of connection with the audience. I don’t just look at the work as business. Getting the perfect result is very personal to me because in many ways it’s a reflection of me.
I’m excited every time someone chooses to go with me for their project or their dream. I’m excited when someone tells another person or company about me. Word of mouth is very much the biggest part of what I’ve been able to do and I’m grateful for it.
It hasn’t been easy choosing to believe that you have something to offer that people will want to invest in and give their money towards. It’s tough to walk in faith like that but you have to just continue to believe in what you’re doing … believe in the gift that you’ve been given.
What I want people to know is that I’m passionate about what I do and when they choose Velvet One Media, they are choosing an experience that is just as important to me as it is to them. Each person or company I work with is the most important person or company. They each get the same passion, detail, communication and creative expertise. If it’s just a logo, a sign, a photo or even when it’s a wedding film or commercial … I’m giving my best.
And that’s really what the brand is about. It’s reminding people that you’re more than just a number when I work with you. I take time to listen and hear what your project is … to learn how much the project means to you and to impress upon you that it’ll mean just as much to me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This has to be the most difficult question of all time because I don’t really parade around the city. I hang out with my family and that’s usually the best time for me. HOWEVER, in the spirit of this, I’ll go ahead and use my brain power.
I love to cook and I love to eat. So if I have the freedom to take a friend on a week long trip here in the city then we’d start with some good food. We’d grab some lunch at Hop Doddy’s because their burgers are insanely good especially the sweet potato fries. For dinner, we’d hit up The Free Man’s Lounge for some great cajun food and music.
We’d definitely check out Texas Live, the Ballpark … Epic Waters … the week would be full of basically everything I would normally do with my family LOL.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First thing .. the almighty … Jesus Christ. It goes without saying that all of this is moot if I can’t recognize from whom my gifts come from. And then my wife, Shenee. She’s been huge in inspiration, motivation and the continued progression of everything that has culminated into Velvet One Media. There are many teachers, pastors, friends and drill instructors that have all helped shape me.
