We had the good fortune of connecting with Colter Doty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colter, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
This is a topic I discuss many times with people who aspire to be entrepreneurs. One of the reasons I was so passionate about building my own company was the ability to own my time. As an employee or someone who is self-employed your time is always owned by either a boss or clients. If you build your own company you can put systems, & processes in place to free up your time. Once in place these things allow you to spend your time doing whatever you love most. That way you have a business that revolves around your life not a life that revolves around your business.

What should our readers know about your business?
There is much I would like to say on this topic, but I will attempt to keep it short as possible. I have found that success in business is doing the opposite of what I feel like doing most of the time. It’s much like going to the gym. Rarely do I feel like going, but once I do, I enjoy the results. This causes me to feel good which in turn motivates me to take more action. Many times, when I am coaching agents, I notice that they are waiting for motivation to get them going. They try to read a book on motivation or sales skills hoping that will make them feel more comfortable with the income producing activities that bring clients. I have always found that motivation usually comes after the action takes place. We are more likely to act our way into feeling vs. feeling our way into action. Success has not been easy for me. I have fought auto-immune illnesses and periods of depression that came along with it. But this has caused me to be more empathetic to clients and agents I’m training. It also caused my mental toughness to increase. Adversity if not yielded too, is like metal going through the fire. It will strengthen and harden it. Don’t wish that it was easier, focus on becoming better. What I am most proud of at Brix Realty is our commitment to educating our clients through the buying and selling process. We go the extra mile to make sure they know how the process works so they feel comfortable from the beginning of the transaction all the way to the closing table. I am also proud of the training, systems, and support we have in place for our agents. We are committed to them succeeding in their real estate career.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite places to eat is at Melting Pot. If you like fondue this is great. If they liked outdoors I would take them for a run or bike ride around White Rock Lake and show them some of the beautiful homes along the water.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife who has loved and supported me through the process. One of my mentors Mike Tuttle who taught me servant leadership, how to love people where they are at, and how to inspire them to become who they were called to be.
