We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Lewallen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cody, how do you think about risk?
Taking risk is the most important thing to my success. Without risk we do not grow nor do we make mistakes which is where the greatest life lessons come from.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe our work speaks for itself as in what sets us apart from others, I’ve never seen another collage with as much material and zero negative space. The road to get here was not an easy one, we come from parents with lots of addiction and abuse. We had to become men at an early age and fend for ourselves however that is what created the bond that made us Cut It Out Collage. Possibly the biggest lesson we carry is how to make something out of nothing, we will always find a way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our studio is the place to be or a dear friends tattoo studio, “The Chose One Ink” is a lot of fun. Anywhere with good art from local artists is where I like to spend my time. Deep Ellum in Dallas and Sundance Square in Ft. Worth have some interesting people.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My best friend and partner Jellyhed is the reason I create, he is the one who started the collages that inspired me to create collages and he always keeps me humble.
