We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, what is the most important factor behind your success?
When I had no money to pay to record my music in a studio, I used a Chromebook that was provided by my school and recorded my vocals on some 5-dollar headphones that I got from a Family Dollar down the road. It’s something I pride myself on and that is my ability to try over and over again. As a high school student, with absolutely no prior knowledge on how to record or how to write a song, I was basically learning on the job! I researched the best affordable equipment and kept them in mind as I wrote songs and saved up to buy them. I learned basic songwriting techniques online through YouTube videos. When I had set my mind on making an album, I realized I would find a way to make time for music no matter the obstacle. It took over all my free time and it’s something I don’t regret one bit.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the main things that sets me apart from others is my determination and ability to try and try again no matter what. Every time I hit a roadblock; I was able to overcome it. When I set a goal, I would do everything in my power to reach it. When I had no money to make music, I used a Chromebook that was provided by my school and recorded my vocals on some 5-dollar headphones that I got from a Family Dollar down the road. It’s part of my name sake too. ImTrying is my mantra because it reminds me to try and do better every single day. It’s how I’ve gotten this far and how I continually push myself to do better. Getting a following as a musician is hard enough, but as a kid it’s even harder because a lot of people won’t take you seriously based on your age. I learned that I wouldn’t be taken seriously until I had data to back it up. I consistently advertised in person at school to kids I didn’t know, to teachers, and to anyone I saw listening to music in public. A majority of my numbers were gained through word of mouth in person and through messages online in random chat servers. Learning to make music was rough, since most of the equipment and knowledge is hidden behind pay walls built to make it nearly impossible to learn for free unless you look really closely. I was lucky enough to find a website called SoundTrap that allowed me to experiment and record with even really cheap equipment. The main thing I learned from everything I’ve done in the past year is that you don’t need money, professionals, or fancy equipment to do what you want to do in music. You just have to learn to deal with what you have, take the cards you were dealt, and TRY your hardest every single day to do better and better. Its okay to fail, its okay if no one likes your music at first, but what matters is that you improve.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love nature, so I’d have to say going to Cedar Hill State Park and mountain biking through it would be our first stop. Then We would go to the Perot Museum of Nature and Science to chill and cool off. Afterwards we would go eat at possibly my favorite place, Pecan Lodge. Next we would most likely want to take some pictures and where better to take pictures than the Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. We would most likely be there all afternoon. Then we could experience the nightlife at Family Karaoke and sing until midnight!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For years, my dad sang with bands and ran karaoke at various bars and restaurants. Seeing other people sing my favorite songs made me want to learn to sing. Without my dad I wouldn’t have the knowledge I have of music genres and live music. When I was a kid he played the guitar for me to sing too, then later on I learned guitar and let him sing to my playing. His singing and his drive to do music was what inspired me to eventually make my own music.
