We had the good fortune of connecting with Caya Crum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caya, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
I love music and pop-culture icons such as David Bowie and Andy Warhol. I also enjoy the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth where I conceptualize many pieces I create. From the classical renaissance paintings to the traveling exhibits, theses historic treasures have granted me many ideas for past projects and the ones I continue to this day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a mix of pop colors and surrealist imagery. It’s different in the way that it uses a diverse range of subjects to widen the overall meaning and audience who might be drawn to it. As of recently, I was commissioned by the Near Southside Community to paint a mural on the former sign of the Massey’s restaurant which I look forward to starting. I also I have been working towards an art-pop up which will feature my latest works on May 8th. There were a few obstacles I faced in getting where I am today, but overcoming these challenges was made easy with a hopeful outlook and a drive to create. During these trials, I learned that art is greatly subjective and not to take things at heart. You are a creative, and as long as you confidently believe it, others will too. I want the world to know who I am as an artist and my art is there for those to both be inspired and take on new experiences by the hand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In Fort Worth, you can never go wrong with the Trinity Trails. They are a great way to get outside and see the beautiful river which seamlessly holds the city together. My favorite place to eat happens to be north of Dallas in a suburb known as Carrollton. This wonderful place is home to a restaurant known as Charm Juk. Here you can get a variety of homemade rice porridge’s that warm you up on a cold day and keep you wanting to come back as often as possible! My favorite place to hang out is the Montgomery Antique Mall. You will find practically anything you could ever need there from 70’s vinyl records to vintage metal hooks, the store is an amazing place and fun to visit.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Since I can remember I have enjoyed making art, and because my parents are artists themselves, it made it easy for me to have access to art shows and other forms of vending. I owe it to my parents and the inspiration in the world around me which has all together pushed me in the direction of pursuing a career in art.
