We had the good fortune of connecting with Carol Edmond and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carol, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing about the home fragrance industry that outsiders may be unaware of is the potential health risks associated with conventional candles and fragrance products. While candles are often associated with creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere, many traditional candles on the market contain harmful ingredients that can release toxins when burned.

Conventional candles are often made from paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum and can release harmful chemicals like benzene and toluene when burned. Additionally, synthetic fragrances used in candles can contain phthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors. These chemicals have been linked to respiratory issues, allergies, and even more serious health concerns over long-term exposure.

Outsiders may not realize the extent to which indoor air quality can be compromised by burning conventional candles. The pollutants released during candle burning can contribute to indoor air pollution, which can have adverse effects on respiratory health, particularly for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma or allergies. This is especially relevant in confined spaces, such as poorly ventilated rooms.

However, there is growing awareness and demand for healthier alternatives in the home fragrance industry. Consumers are increasingly seeking out all-natural and non-toxic options like those offered by businesses like Place of Aroma. These alternatives use natural ingredients, such as soy or coconut wax, and rely on essential oils for fragrance, avoiding the use of harmful chemicals.

By being aware of the potential health risks associated with conventional candles and fragrance products, outsiders can make more informed choices and opt for safer and healthier alternatives that prioritize their well-being and that of their families.

What should our readers know about your business?
Throughout my journey in the aroma industry, I have learned several valuable lessons that have helped shape my perspective and approach to building a successful business. Here are some of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way:

Passion fuels resilience: The road to success is often filled with obstacles and setbacks. It is the passion for what you do that will keep you going when faced with challenges. Cultivate and nurture your passion, as it will be the driving force that propels you forward during tough times.

Differentiation is key: In a saturated market, it is essential to stand out from the competition. Find your unique selling proposition and focus on what sets your products apart. Whether it’s using high-quality ingredients, creating innovative blends, or emphasizing sustainability, make sure to highlight your distinctive features that resonate with your target audience.

Embrace continuous learning: The aroma industry is constantly evolving, with new trends and customer preferences emerging. Stay curious and embrace a mindset of continuous learning. Keep up with industry developments, seek knowledge through research and networking, and be open to incorporating new ideas and techniques into your business.

Build a supportive network: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passion for the industry. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and engage with others in the field. Building a supportive network not only provides valuable insights and guidance but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and inspiration.

Focus on quality and craftsmanship: In a world of mass production, prioritize quality and craftsmanship. Delivering exceptional products that exceed customer expectations will help you build a loyal customer base. Pay attention to every detail, from the selection of ingredients to the packaging and presentation of your products.

Adapt to changing consumer preferences: Consumer tastes and preferences can shift rapidly. Stay attuned to market trends and be adaptable in responding to changing demands. Regularly assess your product offerings and be willing to introduce new scents, explore different formulations, or experiment with innovative packaging to stay relevant.

Cultivate a strong brand identity: A strong brand identity helps you establish a connection with your target audience. Develop a clear brand story and identity that aligns with your values and resonates with your customers. Consistently communicate your brand’s message through your packaging, marketing materials, and customer interactions.

Customer feedback is invaluable: Actively seek feedback from your customers and use it to improve your products and services. Embrace feedback, both positive and constructive, as an opportunity for growth and refinement. Engage with your customers through surveys, social media, or direct interactions to foster a sense of community and build long-term relationships.

Patience and perseverance are key: Building a successful aroma business takes time and perseverance. Be patient with yourself and the process. Celebrate small victories along the way and maintain a resilient mindset. Remember that success often comes to those who are willing to put in the effort and remain steadfast in their pursuit.

Stay true to your vision: Amidst the noise and competition, stay true to your vision and the core values that drive your business. Believe in your products and the impact they can make. By staying focused and staying true to your passion, you will create a business that reflects your authentic voice and resonates with your customers.

Starting a business may be challenging, but by embracing these lessons, remaining resilient, and staying dedicated to your vision, you can carve out your own path and find success in the industry.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents are my ultimate inspiration. They are not only loving and supportive, but they have also shown me the power of determination and the ability to shape our own lives through the choices we make. Witnessing my mom successfully juggle the responsibilities of raising her children while being an entrepreneur and owning a grocery store, and seeing my dad thrive as a restaurant owner, has instilled in me the belief that we have the power to create our own paths and achieve our dreams. They have taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and the importance of pursuing our passions. Their entrepreneurial spirit has left an indelible mark on my life, and I am forever grateful for their guidance and example.
