We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlie Kuban and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carlie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
One big reason I started my business was to support people who were in similar roles and situations that I found myself in, and to be able to use my experience to help them! Having served in a development role at a nonprofit myself, I knew what I needed and what would have been helpful for me. I love being able to connect with other nonprofit development professionals to help them thrive!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The mission of Kuban & Co. Development Consulting is to strengthen nonprofits through client-centered development consulting to better impact our world. In simple terms, I work primarily with nonprofits and their leadership team members for individualized coaching and strategy support. I work with organizations to build annual development plans and learn how to better engage their board, volunteers and donors in all that they do. Some of the problems my clients face that I help them work toward solving are:

1. How to engage their boards in fundraising
2. Connecting donors to their mission
3. Creating strategy for development
4. Prioritizing fundraising in the organization
5. Building a culture of philanthropy

I also help organizations with running online giving campaigns, creating monthly supporter groups, and more. I love helping my clients take an idea or a goal and bring it to fruition.

I would say what sets my company apart is that my focus is all on the clients, my first hand experience and my love for people. I am very flexible in building a plan that helps the organization at an affordable cost. Each organization needs different things, and I can help work within your budget to help address the issues you’re most concerned about. Whether it’s an ongoing relationship, or a one-time engagement to handle a campaign, I’m here to help.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone comes to visit, I definitely have a few favorite places to take them to! It would start with a trip to the Downtown Denton square (of course!) to include dinner at Barley & Board and ice-cream at Beth Marie’s. We’d also probably visit Recycled Books because there are endless treasures there and it’s a true Denton experience.

I also love visiting Legacy Food Hall in Plano. We’d start with a cupcake at the Sprinkles Cupcakes vending machine, then make our way down to the food hall to try all the things!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout to the many “mom-preneurs” who supported and encouraged me in my journey of starting my own business! Especially Randi Skinner, Kayce Strader & Renit Lambert!
