We had the good fortune of connecting with Caresse Hickman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caresse, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Consistency. Consistency when it’s hard, when you’re broke, when you’re not seeing results, when you have to go back to the drawing board, consistency when you have no idea if it’ll work or not. You have to have that because when all of those things happen it’s hard to thrive off “passion” you have to see past that and be consistent even when you aren’t sure when you’ll see those results. When you plant a seed it doesn’t grow the next day it takes time and patience. Be patient and stay consistent in your business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey as a creative started out with a risk. I loved stories! But my entire life I always hid myself, my ideas, and my stories. I felt like they weren’t good enough, too silly, or people just didn’t care. Around 22 I got tired of feeling unseen. I got tired of doing what everyone else wanted me to do. I knew I wanted to start a business but I didn’t think I could do it. Fast forward I just took a risk and trusted God for really the first time in my life. It was so scary and very hard. I’ve always loved Marketing and how it tells a story. Everyone has a different story and this was how I wanted to tell mine. Lucy (my granny) was such a fun spirit. She brought out the side of me that I hid from people. With my marketing and telling a story I revert back to those times where I felt free and a true artist. I’ve always worked in retail as well so when doing my own marketing I take what I learned from my jobs and combined it with my fun side. I love Disney movies and cartoons. That brings out the freethinking inner child in me. I just write and write for hours different ideas that come to mind no matter how crazy they sound. And that is the most fun part to me because it’s like a get a do over of being a kid again with crazy ideas and people love it. I’m not afraid anymore. Imagine how we all could be if we went back to that child like thinking. Children don’t know what fear is. They just do it. My business brought me back to that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Arkansas has a lot of outdoor things to do. Pinnacle mountain is one of the most beautiful places to hike. Once you get to the top it’s literally breathtaking seeing nature. It’s peaceful. For food, Little Rock had the best wings hands down. The city debates on which is the best but to me it’s Wing Shack. They’re garlic lemon pepper wings are perfection. Being in the south we love to eat! Soul food and BBQ is huge here! We have so many good food trucks too. All in all it would be just a lot of outdoor activities and good food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Wow. You know I don’t believe in being “self-made” because I’ve had so much help during this 3 years process of running a business. I’m so grateful for all of the amazing people God has sent me to help me through this process. A community is very much needed in order to keep going I believe. My sister has always believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. She has gotten me out of a lot of dark times. She never lets me give up! No matter how tired, stressed, or frustrated I am. She calms me and reminds me who I AM and that I can do anything. We all need someone like that. This journey is so fickle at times and it’s very easy to give up on yourself, especially being the first in your family to take this risk. Thank you Carmen.
