We had the good fortune of connecting with Capri Gaston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Capri, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been intrigued by photography with a desire for quality photos taken of my family. Living on a budget, I knew I could never afford getting professional photos taken as frequently as I wanted. This sparked the idea that I wanted to provide affordable and quality photos to as many families as possible. I desire to deliver photos that spark feelings and joy within the viewer and do so without the use of body altering programs. I started learning and growing my photography skills by taking classes in person and online as well as doing photo shoots alongside a friend to strengthen our skills together. After 2 years of working as a partnership, I gained the confidence to start Capri Gaston Photography on my own.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a pediatric nurse for a decade and have witnessed some of life’s most precious moments as well as the hardest days of a person’s life. Numerous times I would see a family change before my eyes and I’d wish that I could save a snapshot for remembrance when the memories faded. Photography has been my creative outlet that has bridged the compassion and work ethic I’ve learned in nursing with the picturesque moments that I have encountered in my healthcare career. Working as a nurse through the 2020 pandemic, I learned that life is fleeting and memories with our loved ones need to be captured frequently to savor the moments that we have together.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a fun question for me because I’m originally from Pittsburgh, PA and when family and friends come to Texas, we have jam packed itineraries! The most iconic place that we have visited includes the Fort Worth Stockyards. Seeing rodeo’s, leather boot shops, Tex Mex, BBQ, and longhorns, you get an all around taste of Texas. We would start our day shopping and seeing the cattle drive, eat lunch at Joe T. Garcia’s, and end the afternoon at the rodeo. What is unique about DFW is how close Fort Worth and Dallas are to each other and how different the two cities can feel. The perfect evening to this day would include dinner at Edoku Sushi in Richardson and drinks at Bowen House in Uptown Dallas. The finale would be a view of the city on the Reunion Tower.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have never started my business if it weren’t for my friend and former business partner, Charley Holcombe. We started the business, Thousand Oaks Photography, because we wanted to learn and grow together while capturing the biggest moments in our families lives. Charley helped me grow as a photographer by encouraging and motivating me as well as challenging me to be better in my skills.

I also would not be where I am today without my husband and children. My husband has an entrepreneurial mind and has inspired me along the way. He has given me brilliant business ideas as well as ways to keep myself sharp and motivated.
My kids have always been my test subjects and the perfect little models to practice my skills on. They have endured countless photo shoots and have taught me the patience and level of enthusiasm needed for photographing babies and toddlers.
