We had the good fortune of connecting with Candace Duplessis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Candace, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe there are many factors that have molded my success story. The main factor being God! A huge part of who I am is my relationship with him, and he has shown me that even in times of doubt or fear, he’s with me and working things out. Through that, I’ve also learned to never give up. That’s probably the second most important factor in my success. Keeping the faith, knowing that what is for you, is for you. No matter what the next person has, or what the next person does; despite all of the people who confirm your self doubts and worries, keep pushing forward. I can say that now, because I’ve been through it. It’s easy to become discouraged when you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, but remembering who you are, and standing firm on knowing where you’re going is the most important. Stay true to who you are, stand up for what you believe in, put trust in God, then walk with your head high.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a young black blogger/youtuber from New Orleans! I moved after Hurricane Katrina to a place that taught me a lot of unpleasant lessons. After Hurricane Katrina, my family and I moved to a really small town in Washington State, and being one of the only 5 black children in the school was very hard for me. I never knew what it meant to be judged by the color of my skin, until then. As I got older I had to find who I was and I would always realize that I was never truly accepted, nor did I ever really fit in. Because of that, I fell into a deep depression. I began to lose sight of what it meant to be whole and happy, so I needed a change. When I moved to Dallas, I become more intune with myself and my culture. I was able to discover all of who I was, and that was enlightening for me. That moment, the moment of choosing me, was so pivotal in my story, that I had to share it. I began making blog posts about my journey, which then turned into daily vlogs and videos on my YouTube channel. I started posting because I loved who I had become, and I learned that it was ok for me to struggle. I wasn’t alone in my pain, and sharing that was not only helping other people going through the same experiences, but a huge part in helping me. Posting online, creating a small community of friends and supporters, helped me heal, and helped me smile again. I post lifestyle and travel content, and use my platform to connect and hopefully inspire. This journey has caused me to work with brands that I love, and have actually paved a way for me to start my own business that launches in the upcoming year of 2022! So many blessings have come from my struggles and I am truly better for it. Flowers bloom when rain falls, and I am proof of it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love hosting! And I love that there are so many activities to do here in Dallas! I would definitely take them to the Dallas Arboretum to walk around and see all of the pretty gardens. I love to sight see, so taking them to the Giant Eyeball (Eye at The Joule) down town is a must, as well as showing them the city life of downtown! I would take them to see Klyde Warren Park on a beautiful day or Lakeside Park to take some gorgeous photos and take in the beauty. I love the art work outside of Flea Style, my favorite wall is the rainbow wall, and this is definitely a spot to visit for sure! As a blogger I am constantly looking for cute and fun places to explore, so a few of my favorite restaurants that I would take them to would be, The French Room for a cute brunch/tea, for a little home away from home. Restoration Hardware for their amazing lobster rolls! Paradiso, which is actually right in the heart of Dallas’ Bishop Arts District, where there are tons of inspiring street art and amazing cocktails. Of course, above all, I would take them wherever their sweet heart desires, but I definitely think that they would appreciate visiting a few of these places that I love to enjoy!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this to my family and friends. True connection isn’t easy to find, and it’s even harder to keep. When you begin to fulfill plans and life goals, you also begin to see who is really in your corner supporting you. I’ve lost a few friends along the way, and I’ve upset a few family members for doing things my way, but it always works out for God’s good, and his plans for me. Mom, thank you for always believing in me. To my amazing boyfriend, you have taught me to go hard for myself, as much as I go hard for others, so thank you. My friends, sisters, my ride or dies, you keep pushing me into my purpose! My sisters who have never given up on me! To family that keeps me solid, I love you all. Thank you for everything. And most importantly, thank you God! You have kept me through it all, and you’ve blessed me with these amazing people listed above, and I am forever grateful!
