We had the good fortune of connecting with Camisha Kirk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Camisha, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I believe the best thing I’ve done for my children is surround them with books that tell stories from voices not regularly heard. It allows them to see perspectives that they might not have ever known and hear stories they might have never heard. They have the opportunity to read, study, and learn about experiences, issues, and injustices from a variety of peoples and countries.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a homeschool mom and Content Creator, I not only want to create content that is aesthetically pleasing, but informative as well. I want to be a voice that helps parents, caregivers and educators in guiding their children/students on a path to loving literacy. With America’s literacy crisis, it’s important now more than ever to get good books in the hands of children to help edify them, grow their confidence and become lifelong readers. Many grownups simply don’t know how or where to begin, I’d love to help them in their journey with the knowledge and resources I have.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not native to Texas and my bucket list of things to do is still quite long. We’d first go to Original Pancake House for breakfast, her favorite. Next we’d pop over to the Allen Outlets or Stonebriar Mall for some shopping. From there we’d go downtown McKinney to Mom and Popcorn for a quick treat then head to downtown Dallas to the Museum of Illusions for some fun! Afterwards we’d go to the Reunion Tower Observation Deck site seeing and dinner.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The greatest recognition goes to my mom. She always encouraged my siblings and I to read as much as we could and took us to the library every weekend. Some of my most fond childhood memories are being surrounded by books. Secondly, libraries! Libraries are fundamental to the literacy path and to the communities they serve. I love organizations like Little Free Library that encourages the “Take A Book, Leave A Book” system to help make books accessible to all. I’m a huge supporter of Bookshop.org as they support small bookshops by giving a percentage of sales to a chosen shop. The Dolly Parton Imagination Library program sends free books to families with children from ages 0-5 and is becoming more widely available. These are just a few programs that are inspirational to me.
