Meet Cambry Payton | Cosmetologist / educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cambry Payton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cambry, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
The world of cosmetology is undeniably a realm of both creativity and risk. While I would not change my career path for anything, I have come to understand that the challenges inherent in this industry are not for the faint-hearted. Throughout my journey, I have encountered unkindness from various quarters, whether it be an instructor who consistently targeted me or a peer who failed to embody the camaraderie one would expect from a friend. In this competitive landscape, finding loyal allies and mentors can feel like an uphill battle, and the “dog-eat-dog” mentality is all too prevalent.
My journey in the world of cosmetology began with a significant risk: obtaining my GED in 2018, shortly after the heartbreaking loss of my mother. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of my commitment to pursuing a career that I felt passionate about, despite the emotional turmoil I was experiencing. Fueled by a mixture of grief, fear, and a renewed sense of purpose, I enrolled at Legacy Beauty Academy in Tomball, Texas, in January 2019. I approached my studies with a fervor that was both exciting and daunting.
Graduating in early 2020, I was met with the unforeseen challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic. This global crisis forced me to reevaluate my surroundings and aspirations. I realized that my life in Houston was not aligned with the future I envisioned for myself. Armed with determination, I made the bold decision to relocate seven hours away from my hometown to West Texas, a place that represented a fresh start and new opportunities.
Upon my arrival, I enrolled as a student instructor at the Texas College of Cosmetology in San Angelo. Initially, I believed I had found a nurturing environment where I could thrive. However, the reality proved to be more complicated than I had anticipated. While the transition was fraught with challenges, I was fortunate to have the steadfast support of my family. My grandparents played an instrumental role during this time, stepping in to provide guidance and encouragement when I needed it most. Their sacrifices and unwavering belief in my potential were pivotal in my journey toward self-improvement.
As I navigated the complexities of my career, I also experienced personal growth. It was in West Texas that I met my husband who blessed me with a wonderful bonus child into my life. This new chapter filled my heart with joy and provided me with a sense of belonging that I had long sought. I am immensely grateful for the blessing that led me to the Fort Worth area, where I feel I have truly found my place.
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize that every risk I took, every challenge I encountered, and every individual I have encountered along the way has shaped who I am today. I attribute my successes to God that has illuminated my path. As I continue to grow within the field of cosmetology, I remain committed to fostering positive relationships and uplifting those around me—because even in a competitive industry, we can choose to build each other up rather than tear each other down.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am committed to excellence, placing a strong emphasis on attention to detail and a continuous desire to expand my knowledge of products, tools, and techniques. This dedication sets me apart as I prioritize cultivating meaningful relationships with my clients.
Throughout my journey, I have gained invaluable insights from mentors, friends, and clients alike. Although my path has been anything but conventional, I attribute my ability to navigate challenges to one guiding force: my faith in God, who has illuminated the way forward during difficult times.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I feel like this is a given,of course the stockyards! A little hidden gem I’ve grown to love is in downtown Dallas, STK steakhouse so worth the splurge.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My grandparents have been a steadfast source of support throughout every challenge I have faced. Without their guidance and encouragement, I would not be the person I am today.
