We had the good fortune of connecting with Caitlin King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Caitlin, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
I was always an anxious kid, but things got out of hand when we got a puppy and I couldn’t get over my fear of dogs. Shortly after I started seeing a child psychologist. She was a brilliant woman who had many sayings that I still use today. This quote is my favorite. “Today’s fear, tomorrow’s adventure.” Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “what we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do.” Both quotes mean the same thing, but Emerson doesn’t feel as hopeful. The first quote reminds me to turn that fear into curiosity and ask myself, “what am I so afraid of?” Eventually, I realize that most things aren’t as bad as I make them out to be in my head, and that curiosity turns into the courage to venture outside of the comfort zone. New things will always be a little scary, but they probably won’t kill me! Through this quote, I have learned to find fun in fear. It helped me move past my childhood fear of dogs and fall in love with my first dog, Lilly, and it’s still helping me today.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a singer-songwriter who plays piano and sings. I started writing when I was a little kid, and it got my adolescent self through some tough times. I was diagnosed with depression at 12 years old, and it got worse as I got older. The medications weren’t working. The hardest part was trying to convey my experience with depression to people who’ve never experienced anything like that before. I realized quickly that words alone weren’t going to cut it, so I started using music as a tool to convey the emotions I was experiencing. In the fall of 2019, I started new medications that work, and it feels like I got a second chance at life. I’m finally free of the hopelessness and pain that controlled my life for 6 years. I’ve taken some time to figure out who I am now and what I want to do with this second chance, and I’m back on the artist’s path. This time I want to help others who are in the same place I was and to share the stories of others who weren’t able to share their own.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Dallas, TX, I would go eat and see a show at the Armory in Deep Ellum. I would also see a show at the Ruins! Deep Ellum has lots of great places to hang out, so does Bishop Arts. The arboretum is a beautiful garden all year round! I would give it at least half a day to explore all the gardens.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, Martha King. She runs her own advertising agency and is the strongest woman I know!
