We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brooke, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own practice was never on my radar until I was forced to experience the need for rehab myself. I had always been on the healthcare end of the coin, doing what I could to help people get better and while some did, there was always a handful of clients that would tell me stories of being bounced around the healthcare system due to no one understanding their complaints. Or maybe their issues were dismissed curtly by doctors. Most were able to get somewhat better, but were cut off and forced to stop therapy due to insurance running out or not covering certain treatments. While this always made me sad for them, it never was so important until it happened to me.

After I delivered my first baby, I was suddenly dealing with many issues I honestly had no idea was even an option. I had lots of pain, difficulty not only exercising but just doing the things I needed to do to take care of my baby. While my providers were great, they didn’t really understand my complaints and what I heard most was “this is what happens after you have a baby”. I was not okay with this answer.

As a physical therapist, I knew there was more to the story and began to research, take courses and educate myself on a type of therapist called pelvic floor rehab. My eyes were all the sudden wide open to a whole new world. A world that many women experience but are left alone to deal due to the lack of awareness in the healthcare world, the stigma that is attached to it and quite honestly, because women in our country to not get the time and attention they deserve. The pelvic floor therapy that was available in my area was archaic and not for me. As someone who enjoys working out and exercise, the therapy I was given was just me laying flat on a table, it was passive and I could tell, was just a protocol. I needed someone to help me get back to running, to squatting, to jumping without telling me I had to stop doing the things I loved!

I was on fire. I needed to get the word out and I needed to be the provider for others around me that I wished I had for myself. This is where my business was born. I began to see clients one at at time out of a small room the the gym that I was a member of. I knew this therapy that I was providing was unlike anything out there. I wanted to mold together the pelvic health world and the performance world. Helping people feel strong, capable and prepare them fully for real life. Not only did I want to treat clients as a whole, understanding they core and pelvic floor better than anyone, I wanted the experience to be custom, specific to them, their goals and their dreams.

I had no big dreams of being an entrepreneur, managing people or growing a business. The only thought I had initially was it was an emergency for me to provide care to people that was off the beaten path, something different, something crucial.

Four years later, I have 3 people on my team with me. We specialize in orthopedic and pelvic health concerns. Our business model as grown to not only help women across their lifespan, but men who are looking for a more customized treatment plan that is performance based. I was forced along the way to learn how to be a business owner as that was the only way I could continue to help as many people as possible.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
PeakRx Therapy is an orthopelvic physical therapy practice providing performance based care for all people. We honestly are unlike any other clinic for a few reasons.

Our expertise in molding orthopedic care and pelvic health allows us to truly treat each person as a whole. We are experts in understand you from the inside out. We believe that allows us to connect dots for people in their history and they complaints and allows us to truly get to the root case of your problems.

Our clinic is also stocked with things like barbells, kettlebells, and pull ups bars. We believe therapy shouldn’t be simple exercises on the mat but should look like your daily life, your sport and your goals.
We also chose to be out of network with all insurances as we want our allegiance to be to you our client and not a company. Because of this decision, we are able to see clients for a full hour, one on one. All eyes are on you with no shared treatments. Due to this dedicated time, we are able to see clients significantly less over the span of your treatment. We are able to dig deep and work diligently allowing our clients to get better for good!

My business was born out of a need after having a child. Being a mom is one of my greatest joys and has absolutely also been my biggest struggle. Entrepreneurship is a lonely world and very difficult when managing small children. I have had 2 more babies since opening my business. When I delivered, I had to just lock the doors and put things on hold as I had no help, no maternity leave and no way to continue on. The struggle of balance these two worlds has absolutely been the biggest barrier for me but at the same time, has given me eyes and empathy towards clients who I know want to get better, but have many things they are juggling in life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in North Dallas for basically my whole life, I have a lot of favorite places and things to do that take me all over the metroplex!

We would absolutely start with brunch at Seven Mile Cafe in Lewisville to have their gluten sensitive pancakes and California Benny.

Lunch would be at Marty B’s in Bartonville for the amazing patio and music.

Dinner’s would take us to Grandscape where we can eat at Seven Doors, Barley and Board or Bread Zepplin. We would then hang out in their outdoor area to listen to music, ride the farris wheel or walk around the amazing Scheels.

We love walking around downtown Denton as this is a weird, quirky little pocket of goodness in our area. With amazing thrift store, eating places, coffee shops, breweries and more, Denton is amazing and one of our favorites.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
PT Biz is an mentorship and mastermind group dedicated to helping people like me grow their business. They have been a crucial piece in the success of my business as they are physical therapists themselves who want to provide a different level of care. The group provides business coaching as well as monthly accountability. It has helped me to not feel so lonely and there to help me make the big decisions needed in business.
