We had the good fortune of connecting with Broderick Perkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Broderick, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Choosing a music career and starting my own entertainment company gives me the opportunity to impact the lives around me. Music is just a platform and vehicle to express my faith. I have a unique opportunity to reach people who are struggling to find their identity, value, and meaning in life through art. I chose this path simply because I love it! I love songwriting and I have been producing since I was 14 years old. I’m so glad I have found my own sound: Alternative Hip-Hop, R&B, & Soul Music. I see that many artists seek popularity, fame, status, temporary gains, buying instagram followers, views, etc but I want to make “Purpose” revelant and popular. I want to change the music game and how it’s played.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Over the years, I grew to have so many music influences like Michael Jackson, Anthony Hamilton, Allen Stone, Leon Bridges, Outkast, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, Chris Brown, Beautiful Eulogy, and so many more artists. I would mimick styles, cadences, and sounds until I found my own. My sound is rooted in Gospel truths, but it is Alternative Hip-Hop. This means I fuse genres like R&B, Soul, Rock, & Jazz into Hip Hop music. The way I overcame challenges with pursuing music is keeping a small circle of people who will always be there and never use me for my talent. The important thing I’ve learned is owning my master recordings and music compositions. There are so many shady deals artists sign and they end up broke when it’s all said and done. I want the world to know that there is only one Broderick Perkins. I have something different and a story to tell. I stay true to myself and don’t follow trends. Originality is key to an effective career.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many great places like Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts District, and Legacy Hall. These places have amazing art, music, and food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people have influenced my walk and journey over these years. I know this sounds cliche and you hear it almost on every award show but my foundation of music and entertainment starts with my relationship with Christ; music is ministry. It is a tool to draw people closer to Him. I am just a broken & imperfect vessel just willing and making myself available to be used by God. Without his righteousness, goodness, & faithfulness I wouldn’t be here today pushing forward. I also want to thank my cousin Moses! He has a duo funkadelic hip hop group called Cadillac Muzik who charted Texas Billboard in 2018. He taught me so much about music entertainment, music business, and music publishing. He has helped me budget and market my music the right way and is always reminding me not to rush any projects because Spotify placements will always be there, YouTube views will come, and an organic following will happen in time. Obviously my parents are my biggest support and marketing team. Always sharing my music everywhere they go! Special shoutout to them and also my mentors Mike & Dave who have mentored me in life. I can’t forget my big brother Thomas who is always speaking truth into my life. We can’t do this walk alone. Last but not least, my video team Tyler, Levi, and Albert who have believed in my music and vision since day one. They love helping me with my visuals and photoshoots!
