We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Lillie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
A year ago, I had no intention of starting a business. I was spending all my time trying to find that perfect 9-5 job in the field I studied, Marketing. I didn’t realize how challenging it would be to land a good job in Marketing, but fortunately that was the motivation for starting SociallyHer.
It was after my 3rd interview for a well known company here in Dallas. I was interviewing for their Social Media Manager position and I was so excited. This was a company that I loved and wanted so badly to be a part of. Things didn’t play out as expected. I never got a call back after my 3rd interview and leading up to this interview I had already met with several other companies that must have found more qualified candidates for their open positions.
At this point in my life I was feeling hopeless, but one day as I was scrolling through TikTok I came across a Creator who at the time was a Social Media Manager for her business, SociallyKels. I thought, what if I just start posting on TikTok and Instagram like she did when she started off and maybe I could one day be my own boss and have a successful social media agency.
3 months later, SociallyHer is fully booked and the best part is that all of my clients found me organically. I now work full time for myself and couldn’t imagine life to be any better.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I moved to Dallas from Eugene, Oregon on January 1st, 2021 and two months later graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in Business Marketing.
My professional life as a post graduate was anything but normal. From then to now, I never once landed a professional job in Marketing. I had high hopes and was very persistent with applying, interviewing, and following up but I guess God had other plans for me.
I never got a call back after my 3rd interview for a Social Media Manager position with a company that I truly admired. At this point in my life I hit a low and was starting to question my ability, knowledge, and career. All I knew is that I wanted to work in Marketing. I didn’t want to be that person that went to college for Marketing and then ended up in working in a completely different department. I was set on Marketing and nothing was going to change my mind.
One day as I was scrolling through TikTok I came across a Creator who at the time was a Social Media Manager for her business, SociallyKels. I thought, “what if I start posting on TikTok and Instagram like she did, maybe one day I’d own my own social media agency and work for myself”.
3 months later, SociallyHer is fully booked and the best part is that all my clients found me organically. If I had never started posting on TikTok and Instagram, I would not be here today.
If there’s one lesson I can take away from my journey so far, it’s to be consistent and always bet on yourself. Believe that you are capable, always take on the challenge, and get comfortable being uncomfortable.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Easy! If my best friend was visiting the area here’s how I would give them the best time ever.
If this was a week long trip, I’d definitely plan to spend a few days in Fredericksburg. What better way to spend time with my best friend than over a glass of wine!
After getting back to Dallas, we’d definitely visit several coffee shops. My favorite coffee shop in Dallas is Ascension. Fun fact about me, I was a barista for 5 years! So trust me when I say Ascension has amazing coffee! Other coffee shops we would visit would be Magnolias and The Salty in Bishop Arts because their donuts are to die for!
During the middle of the days we’d take a stroll on the Katy Trail and head down to the water where the fountain is and have a picnic! It’s the little things in life that bring joy!
For Happy Hour we would absolutely have to visit Saint Anns and Mercat. Those are my two favorite places to go! Mercat has the best Cucumber Mint Martinis and a beautiful french inspired atmosphere that makes me feel like I’m in Paris.
For dinner we’d have to visit the Hudson House because I hear phenomenal things about their food!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m so fortunate to be surrounded by like minded individuals who understand the ins and outs of running a successful business. I’d like to shoutout my boyfriend, Jye for being so supportive of my decision to travel down a more narrow path, my friend Katelyn for being my first client and believing in me and my success, my friend Johanna for always being my motivation and challenging me to keep going.
Lastly, thank you to my family that lives over 1,500 miles from me. Thank you for never doubting me, you’ve always believed in me and never stopped showing your support.
