We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittani L. Samuels and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittani, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe risk should be taken. Everything in life has risks and choices. Do you choose fear and risk your future, and what could have been? Or do you choose to step out on faith, regardless of the outcome? There is no grey area, you either do it or you don’t. Taking chances has helped me in life because it has contributed to the advancement of my career. I did not know what to expect when I launched House Of Allura. African/African American religious practices have been demonized for years. I was not sure of how far I would go with my business, but I am glad I took that chance. Creating Medicine for the Mind was a risk for me because I had to allow myself to be vulnerable. Although I wanted to help people, I knew I would have to walk in my truth. Transparency is key, you must be relatable. I had to be honest about my experiences.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a business called House Of Allura and built a brand called Medicine for the Mind. House Of Allura is a spiritual business, that was established with a mission to help others step into their power. My products include spiritual candles, herb-infused oils, and more. Also, I am an author and podcast host. In 2020, I wrote a book called Medicine for the Mind: The 30-day healing journal. My book is a spin-off of my podcast, Medicine for the Mind. The brand was created to help others take back their power. The book focuses on mental and emotional health. I tackle childhood trauma, that travels into adulthood. I focus on self-love, mental health, healing, and more. There are affirmations, exercises, and writing prompts included in the book. Medicine for the Mind is based off experience and exercises that I have done, personally. I aim to help the readers and listeners elevate mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. My podcast is available on over 7 platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Anchor.
I am where I am today because of God and my willingness to change. It was not easy getting where I am today. I endured a lot of challenges along the way, and still do. I was able to overcome most challenges because I remembered the end goal. I said to myself “if you stop now, this is it,” and that brought me back to reality. I have struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my life, so it has been a battle. I was not sure of what was to come, but I knew I was not content with where I was at in life. The major key is change. You have to be open to change. Sometimes, you may need to change your mindset, environment, friends, etc. You should never be content with being “okay,” strive to be great. I am always open to change because I always want more. That is how I overcome obstacles; I can never settle. If I allow my self to be defeated, then I am settling.
What sets me apart from others? My mindset and sense of direction. I do not wait for a seat at the table, I build the table. I will not wait for my “moment” to come, I am the moment. You cannot wait for things to fall into your lap.
Of all the things I have created, I am most proud of my book, Medicine for the Mind. I worked extremely hard on it, down to the tiniest details. Everything I have created makes me proud, and I am prouder of myself for doing them. I do not know what is to come, but I am very excited for the future. I have a lot in store, and this is only the beginning.
During my journey, I have learned to never lose sight of my vision. I stray away and get off track sometimes, and that is okay. If, I regain focus. I have learned to block out the naysayers. People will tell you what you cannot do because they did not do it. Always be careful who you listen to, or you will end up just like them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Uptown Dallas during the week, Downtown Dallas on Friday and Saturday, and Bishop Arts for brunch on Sunday! Dallas has a lot of hidden gems; it would be a lengthy itinerary. I am a vegetarian so the food would be an easy pick. I love Vegan Food House, Casa Del Vegano, Itso Vegan, and Project Pollo. Those restaurants would be on the to-do list!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I cannot give thanks to just one person. I must thank everyone who has supported me during my journey and throughout my career. Whether it was family, friends, supporters on social media, or complete strangers, I’m grateful for all the love and support. I cherish those who genuinely want me to succeed, and value everyone who always believed in me.
