We had the good fortune of connecting with Britney Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Britney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
In 2018 I had been sharing my bullet journal designs on my youtube channel for a while and started getting inquires about making custom bullet journals. I started getting questions about my handwriting and how people wanted it for their journals. I also realized that in terms of WOC I could bring a different look to the planner world. Melanin Eclectic was just my channel at the time but I decided then that it would be my entire brand. So I went through the process of turning it into an LLC and here we are today.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While I am working towards making my business full time I am actually an engineer. Even though I do not plan on staying in the field, I am very proud of that degree and the accomplishments that I have made using that degree. That degree has also given me the discipline that I need in my business. I am a very hard worker and I enjoy climbing the professional ladder. My ambition and drive is something that not only has pushed me in my engineering career but gave me the confidence that I needed to run my own business. By embracing myself and being proud of who I am, I want that to translate into my business. I am a Black woman who loves video games, cosplay, stationary and reading books. I have created a brand that highlights the nerd life and I have been trying to make sure that comes through in my business through my shop characters, art and stickers.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A Girls Week in Houston more than likely means Beyonce is in town and we love attending her concert, this is very difficult question for me because I am always finding something new and wonderful about Houston. Brunch – Grace’s (That fried chicken biscuit is life changing) Dessert – Bubble Waffle & Tea Dessert – Decadent Coffee and Dessert Bar Ramen Spot – JINYA Ramen Bar Random Restaurant to try – Hako Bento Fun NERD bar – Neil’s Bahr Arcade – Eighteen Twenty Lounge On the spot that is the most that I can come up with. When my besties come to visit me we usually have a theme picked and they pick places they want to go.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout out is going to be a couple different people because starting a business is no joke and I do not think I would still be doing this. Obviously I have to thank my family and friends because they are usually my sound boards of ideas and all of frustrations. I’ve also gained some business colleagues that have also been wonderful. Erion Goins from Cookie Sticker Co, Willa Morton (Youtuber) and Amber from Ce Delire candles. It’s very nice to be able to discuss business with and to experience certain things with. I have been learning a lot about money, business, and taxes through Organized Money (Youtube) and Paper and Sparks. I’ve been building a wonderful tribe full of amazing people and great support.
