We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianna Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brianna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first started taking photos as a freshman in college, I had no plans of starting my own business. I took pictures for fun because I had a camera and it was something I liked to do. I knew someone who did photography as a source of income and as my skills progressed I thought, “huh… maybe this is something I can do, too?” Still, it took me about a year before I felt confident enough to charge people for portraits.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from other photographers is the style of my work. Each photographer has a specific style of shooting and editing, and I’m proud to say there aren’t many that have work like mine. I have been told a couple times that when people see my photos, they immediately know I took them. I am proud of myself, if I’m being honest. It took a lot for me to get to where I am today because I struggle with social anxiety. In the beginning, I would spend all day leading up to a photoshoot rehearsing what I would say to my clients, and what questions I would ask. Now, conversation flows naturally – as does the posing – so I can focus on building connections and capturing emotions in my photos. That being said, it was not east to get to where I am today. It took a lot of practice and patience. Imposter syndrome is a huge feat to overcome and though it still does get to me sometimes, I do my best to ignore it and persevere. Along the way I have learned that 1. not everyone will be a fan of your work. 2. there will be slow periods where it feels like your business is at a standstill 3. as cheesy as it sounds, practice makes perfect. Just keep on going out and taking photos.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Okay.. If I had friends visiting DFW I would DEFINITELY take them to Snooze an A.M. Eatery. It is by far the best breakfast/brunch spot I’ve been to in Dallas. Hopdoddy Burger Bar is another favorite place of mine. For drinks I would take them to Katy Trail Ice House. If they’re visiting in the summer I would take them to Rockledge Park, Arbor Hills, Tandy Hills or another outdoorsy place where we could have a picnic or just spend the day relaxing. If they’re visiting in the fall or winter, maybe somewhere like the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens or the Dallas Arboretum so we can admire the fall foliage. As you can probably guess, I love to be outside! Some indoor places include: Puttery, the Pero Museum or really any other museum downtown.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my family. From the get-go they have supported me. Before I even picked up a real camera for the first time my dad told me I had an eye for photography, and when I started my business they let me quit my job so I could focus on building it. My friends also deserve credit because they supported me as well, and they have always been willing to step in front of my camera when I want to try out new ideas or just need new content.
