We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Romas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We initially started Urban Trivia back in 2017 to break up the monotony of the nightlife scene in the DFW among other events. Then during the pandemic we had to pivot to doing them on zoom. We got hundreds of people on zoom and it gave us the thought to create it as a card game. We launched the card game December 2020 and has been so blessed to work with fortune 500 companies such as Apple, the WNBA, and Toyota. Then in 2022 when we launched the 2nd edition who knew we would be launching a whole touring game show! that was just God at work because it wasnt in our plans at all. We wanted to celebrate black culture through shared experiences. and now as we take this show on tour throughout the country we not only see that we are more alike than we are different as black people but even in corporate spaces with a myriad of backgrounds and ethnicities the same thing reigns true. This game is multi cultural, multigenerational and an all around authentic reflection of the best in black culture.

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets us apart from the other card games is that we specialize in edu-tainment. We want to celebrate our rich black culture but we also want to have fun while doing so. This is a party game thats safe enough for work and the fam but lit enough for the adult kickback or girls night.

We got to where we are today by having vision. Seeing before we ever even had a product in hand what this thing could be. Moving the right way making the right connections and doing good business. this was not easy by far. with a 4 man ownership group its easy to get distracted or listen to outside noise or be selfish and want things to go your way but realizing whats best for the collective and the company and keeping a unified front no matter whats going on and moving with purpose and intentionality.

We definitely learned the value of relationships. Relationships can open doors money can even get you close to. Building the right team, doing good business and executing on deliverables has been key in building and sustaining this thing of ours. We also learned the importance of betting on yourself. Not waiting on a sponsor, not waiting til we build an audience not waiting til we build a fanbase but going executing on this God given vision anyway. I saw someone say faith isnt “what if”, faith is “Even if”. That quote sticks with me because even if we don’t have all the necessary resources at the time we are going to trust God and his plan and purpose and know that we lack nothing and believe that once we start walking along the journey God will provide the resources needed at the time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have to go to brunch, nobody does Sunday funday like Dallas so we gonna go to The Fivee for brunch then we gonna shoot out to Lava Cantina for Neo Soul Sunday’s! Live band, beautiful people, yea a time will definitely be had! we will have to go to Kitchen and Kocktails, Southern Gourmet Kitchen, & Pangea. As far as nightlife goes we have to hot on TikTok for things to do lol I know i’m the event guy and you would think I would know the hot spots… lol I DONT!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A lot of people deserve credit in our story. Most importantly God! He has blown our mind with the things he’s done through this company for our lives and our families lives. Next each one of our ownership group. Marcus Chappell, Jason Johnson and Darren Anderson because had it not been for them I wouldnt be apart of this. I initially was just the host of the show with little to no input of the content or anything else for that matter and now to be sort of the face of the company it takes a lot of selflessness from those guys. Next I would have to shout out Talaun Henderson she was definitely a foundational piece of this thing in the beginning. our cafe214 family Maine and Mitch for opening their doors to us when we only had 20 people show up to when we had hundreds showing up they never wavered on their support for us. Rachel Chang!!! I was doing a vendor event at the Dallas Black Bloggers (S/o to Kayla) conference and she was a guest speaking on a panel, she thought our concept was interesting and told me she wanted us to come do Urban Trivia Live at Legacy Hall for Black Business month. That spring boarded everything we are doing right now with that being one of the best relationships that has allowed this company to grow and flourish. Last and maybe most important Dennis McMurray! Dennis is our creative director he is responsible for the look, feel aesthetic and the whole Man on the street series was all his idea which has propelled us to go viral time and time again! Huge shoutout to everyone that has had a hand in, helped along the way pushed us, introduced us to someone thank you thank you THANK YOU!
