We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
The way I think about risk, is a chance for opportunities. Many of us dream about achieving the long term goal, but many don’t take the risk to take action to create those opportunities. I knew, that if I always feared to take risks, I would never get the chance to see an opportunity. Any time I had a new idea, but knew it would be pretty risky…. My husband would reassure me that “scared money don’t make no money.” Once I became familiar of facing the risks, I wanted to keep doing it again and again.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Glow Artistry Studio, began under the name “GlowbyAngela” when I was an upcoming lash artist from Fort Worth working from home. My first two years in business, I was working full time as a personal banker and doing lashes any other free time I had. Lashing began to consume most of my schedule, I was finding myself using my vacation days just to service clients. There came a point where clients were beginning to not come back, due to me not having availability. I would finish a great set for the client and when it came down to pre-booking them, I would tell them “I’ll let you know when I can get you in again because I work a full time job.” Eventually I had to make the decision, and choose the career path I wanted to pursue. After being in the banking industry for nearly 6 years, I decided to put my two weeks notice in. I’ve never felt so scared, but so ready at the same time. As an adult, I had to make it a goal to make a certain amount per day, to be able to pay my bills. Looking back, to that day I resigned from my corporate job, I wish I would have done it sooner. We are now 4 1/2 years in business, and have grown from being just a lash artist doing lashes, to owning a Cosmetology School. Once I was able to get a feel for what it was working for myself, I knew there was much more out there for me. Over the time, I started a lash brand. My lash brand ships all over the United States and Canada. The product line is what helps other lash artists, keep their job going. Without quality products, there’s no loyal clientele. My supporters on Instagram, gave me the opportunity to teach them my ways and style of lashing. I ended up being an educator, and started teaching women from all over the States. Aside from teaching serval classes a month in Fort Worth, TX… I have been a traveling educator in Austin, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, New Jersey, New York, Las Vegas, and more to come. Between all this time, I had went back to school for my Master educator license. I knew that once I had that license under my belt, it was the beginning all over again for my career. Fast forward to the present, I am now a Lash artist servicing my loyal clients who have been with me for years, owning a salon that allows other artists to have a home and grow their business, a lash brand that is being worn by women all over the world, to officially being a Cosmetology school owner, giving others an opportunity to start their career in the beauty industry. The lessons I’ve learned, were to definitely be patient, and allow the process to flow in the way it’s meant to be. On social media, the growth may have seemed like an easy journey. My followers have helped me celebrate my wins, but there has in no doubt been losses as well. Entrepreneurship isn’t easy, you’re never “ready” for it, you never “balance” it either…. But it’s the dedication and passion that gets you to as far as you want to go. 4 1/2 years into my business, and I’m just getting started. I want to leave a legacy behind to be recognized as empowering others to go after their dream, no matter the costs, and I’m not speaking financial wise. Put in the WORK.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For someone visiting Fort Worth, you have to be open to different opportunities. From amazing steak houses, to street taco spots. My current favorite steak house, is The wicked butcher located in downtown Fort Worth. Once I shared the location with clients, they have thanked me for the recommendation. Another one of my favorite places to eat is the Japanese Palace on Camp Bowie. It’s the most homelike hibachi I have found in town. A good taco place has to have great salsa. My go to for many years has been Taqueria Temos. Now, if my best friend wants to have some fun, I would rent out a cycle party. They’re so much fun, it fits up to 16 people and you bring your own booze. Listening to music and pedaling around town, is a whole vibe. Depending if I worked all day, I’d be in the mood to go dance a little at any night club as long as they’re not over crowded, you’ll know by the lines outside!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I started my business, I had the main support from my husband, kids and my parents. Their unconditional love and support to be there every step of the way never went unnoticed. They’ve witnessed all the late nights, early mornings with me. I have the best team I could ever ask for. Juan, my husband has now transitioned from years in the construction field… to being my professional photographer. He has seen how important content is for me to keep running my business, and now plays a major role.
