We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy LittleSun, MBA, CMPE and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Amy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business was to be able to do what I love as a professional while being more available for my kids and my husband. I had been running a medical practice for the previous 5 years and felt a change was in order; but I didn’t think making the jump to another company was the correct step. I wanted more flexibility and control over my schedule and my work. I wanted to be there for my kids. Take them to activities, be with them when they are sick, be home during Spring Break. I determined that starting my own medical practice consulting company was the way to go. I could still support physicians and help medical practices grow and thrive while being able to do the same for my family. Along with the knowledge I had gained in the last 15 years working in the medical industry, my drive for learning and growing, and the support from my colleagues and family I felt confident enough to make the leap.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Practice Management On The Go is just as it sounds! We support practices of all specialties and sizes with all from Operations, Reporting, Physician Onboarding, Credentialing & Licensing, Human Resources, OSHA/HIPAA Compliance, etc. Projects can be short or long term and can be performed off site (hence “On The Go”). We do make site visits but most of our work can be done behind the scenes. Running a medical practice can be a huge undertaking and is a lot to handle. We are excited to be able to help! I can put myself in the shoes of a Practice Manager because I’ve been there. I know the good, the bad and the ugly. I’ve been excited, I’ve been proud, I’ve been deflated, and I’ve been burnt out. All of those feelings are a lot of what drove me to create this business. I love what I do and I want to help ensure other Practice Managers & Physicians continue to love what they do.

I started out working at the front desk of an optometrist office. I worked my way up to supervisor at an orthopedic office and then to surgery scheduling. I was encouraged by my mentor who was a Practice Administrator to get my Masters Degree. It was 8 years from the time I started my first front desk job until I became a Practice Manager. There were definitely ups and downs but It’s important to remember that just because a wrong decision is made or a failure (or delay) happens, it doesn’t mean YOU failed. When I first became Practice Manager, I told myself: ‘It’s ok to make a mistake. Do your best not to but it’s not the end of the world if you do.’ And I did make mistakes. I said wrong things, I made wrong decisions…but I LEARNED from those. I talked to colleagues, read books, went to conferences. I’m a firm believer that if you are not learning you are not growing. That is especially true for me now that I own my own business. I don’t stop learning here.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting the area, I would make a stop at Legacy West for some shopping and delicious dining. I love Haywire and Taverna. We might also go to Bam for Blow Outs and Make-Up before heading to Pete’s Piano Bar in Frisco for a night of Dueling Piano fun! Another fun stop might be the Truck Yard or I’ve been wanting to try out the Pocket Sandwich Theatre in Carrollton. If she wants a relaxing time, I would treat her to Woodhouse Spas.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, my husband deserves a ton of credit in my success. He encouraged me during my Masters program, supported me in my Practice Management position, and gave me the confidence to believe that I had what it takes to run my own business. He talks through pros and cons with me and is my voice of reason.

My children are my why. My oldest was so supportive and proud of my new business and even gave me $5 to put towards my business expenses (to which I put right back in her piggy bank).

My parents and siblings continue cheer me on and express how proud they are. That is a huge motivational driver for me.

Last, but certainly not least, the providers, colleagues, and friends who have supported me along the way and continue to support me. I could not have done this without them and their feedback, guidance, and words of encouragement.
