We had the good fortune of connecting with Amy Claro & Amy Coffey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amy Claro & Amy Coffey, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Before we started Accessory Concierge we both worked full time in the corporate world, which allowed little to no flexibility to be present for our families and friends. The spark of AC began over a conversation of wanting to have careers yet be around to raise our kids. We made a commitment from the beginning that our days would be heavily loaded during school hours, allowing us to be around for carpools, school activities etc. As our business has grown we have kept to that philosophy, with a workforce being 90% moms, whom we allow to drop off and pick up their kids, so they, too, can have a better balance in their lives. There’s never a perfect answer for balance. There are many days where you feel that you are letting someone down…wether that’s an employee, business parter, child or spouse. But, at the end of the day, we feel confident that the “balance” we have created suits us more better than our old lives.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well, first thing first…owning a business is not for the faint of hearts. There are real highs but there are real lows. Balancing those emotions for a business that you are so passionate about can be difficult. However, the trade off is that it’s yours. You get to turn the day around, turn the quarter around…change the pace and direction if it’s not going down a path you life. Flexibility is KEY. In our personal situation with a partnership, it’s wonderful to have someone to bounce ideas, concerns and directions off of daily (hourly). This also, of course, comes with the need for flexibility is hearing each other out, problem solving and navigating the curveballs, that inevitably arise daily.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Welcome to Big D! First stop…head to the Design District to shop Accessory Concierge…of course! In Dallas you must be properly accessorized. Top lunch spots we love: Chuys (where the concept of AC was born), Jose on Lovers, the Honor Bar in HP Village and Mi Cocina , of course. For dinner we love: Drake,s, Shinsea &Beverley’s. For shopping we love: Northpark Mall (the most gorgeous mall ever) and you can’t beat the people-watching and luxury of Highland Park Village.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Our families! Not only did they have the confidence in us to take on this risk, but they have our biggest cheerleaders. Also, our amazing group of women we have hired along the way have help us to create a fun, creative and exciting workplace. We are all moms first, but we have a seriously supportive girl gang.
