We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexus Morris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexus, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The amount of time that goes into each order can be extensive. Being a custom cake studio means everything is tailored to that specific individual. From the time that a potential customer reaches out, the time starts. Corresponding via emails, phone calls, planning the design, shopping for the supplies, picking up the supplies if delivery is not an option, baking cakes, prepping other ingredients like buttercream or fondant pieces and so much more goes into just one cake, your cake! Custom cakes on average, takes a total of 8 hours to create, not including shopping and customer interactions such as emailing, etc.

Once outsiders are aware of the amount of time that goes into each order, they have a more understanding as to why custom cakes are priced higher than grocery store cakes.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
What sets me apart from others is even when I’m afraid to step out of my comfort zone, I will still step! I have every dream of being a versatile cake designer, meaning if you want an elegant cake with loads of flowers, I can do that, or how about an awesome kids’ cake still within my artistry range, I got it! I never wanted to limit myself because I know that I can do it. Everyone says to find your niche and for me, that was pretty difficult until I found it. The challenges that I had to overcome were my own limiting beliefs, I stayed in my way because I was afraid, and self-sabotaging was all I knew. The lessons that I have learned along the way of being an artist are, to wait until you’re finished with your masterpiece before criticizing it and trust the process.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I tend to look at Dallas Love List on IG for all my go to spots, however I found this beautiful gem in flowermound called Lost Colony and OMG!! The food, the atmosphere everything about this place was 10/10 and I love mexican food so this place is a must!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Jordan Morris. He is the only person besides God of course, that has helped me get this far in my career. I have so much more to go but the person that i am now is all because of him. He pours so much love and knowledge into me that i had no choice but to get it.

I love you forever.
