We had the good fortune of connecting with Alec Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alec, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think in many ways anything that drives your business and personal growth forward requires an element of risk, so I can safely say that risk has been ever present in everything I’ve ever done! However, as an engineer it has always been a measured risk in terms of the potential outcomes and as a mathematician I’ve also weighed up the probabilities of those outcomes. I know many people looking from the outside would say I have taken some very big risks in the past, both in life and business, but to me they have always felt well within my risk tolerance for these reason.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have a diverse background covering the fields of aeronautical engineering, architectural design and construction, graphic design, web design and development, digital marketing and advertising, computer programming, mathematical modelling of financial systems, algorithmic trading, video production and business consultancy!
Quite varied, but all have a common thread… Problem solving. Specifically, using the latest tools and technologies to get the job done efficiently.
Whilst I’m involved in a number of businesses and wear a number of different hats, the one that I’m most excited about at the moment is my Take One Tech brand… something that really grew out of a simple YouTube channel. The channel itself was only intended to be a test bed for me to practice the process of making tutorial style videos in one take. A skill that I wanted to hone for the production of course content in one of my other businesses.
In 18 months, Take One Tech has grown into a full training and consultancy in its own right! I help individuals, business owners and coaches be more productive, impactful and professional with tech. I do this by focusing on two core areas. First is the automation and productivity tools and systems that can be used to be more efficient with our time. Second is on how my clients can better deliver their content, message and value to the the world, with tech.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well this is an interesting question… I live in a remote area of North East Thailand and when folks come to visit me here, we’d likely be heading off to somewhere else in Thailand! I’ve been living in Thailand for 16 years and it is such a great place to live – wonderful people, culture, food and weather.
It is always nice to spend some time in Bangkok, and an evening dinner cruise on the Chao Praya River in a converted traditional rich barge, taking in the sight of the Grand Palace and Temples along the river is not to be missed!
To come to Thailand and not see the glorious beaches would be a crime, so a trip to the islands of Phuket, Koh Tao or Samui would be on the agenda. However if someone was looking for a quieter beach retreat, it would have to be Ko Lipe. It was scuba diving that brought me to Thailand originally and there are some wonderful dive sites around the islands.
Another place to visit would surely be Chiang Mai – a city in the mountains in the North West of Thailand. A beautiful place that shows another side of the Thai Culture.
More of a week long country break, rather than a city break, but all worth of a mention!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been so many people in my life that have helped, supported or influenced my path in a positive direction… too many to list, but if I had to pick one, it would be Neil Hutchinson, my Design & Technology teacher from high school from the age of 14-18.
I took on some ambitions projects at that time and whilst many others were telling me I was taking on too much, Neil was the one (aside from my parents) who had total belief in what I was doing and gave me both the full autonomy and guidance, when I needed it, to achieve my goals.
Neil really helped to foster my self believe at that critical age, through which I learnt that big things are possible when you set your mind to it. I also learnt not to be restricted by other peoples’ limiting beliefs!
