We had the good fortune of connecting with Adriana Barriga and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Adriana, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think one of the most important factors that has contributed to the success of my business is the ability to see beyond a person’s diagnosis. Most of my clients are autistic and nonspeaking, and many of them have been labeled as cognitively disabled because they cannot accurately show their understanding and comprehension. However, we always presume competence and intelligence in our clients and use a nonconventional educational approach to teach them how to learn and communicate. We know our student are smart and capable, and we treat them as such from the very first session. We work with all kinds of students no matter their skill level, behaviors, or age. We believe all students are capable of learning grade level academics as well as communicating their own complex thoughts and ideas.
What should our readers know about your business?
RPM of Texas provides educational therapy that teaches nonspeaking autistic people how to communicate. Our students learn how to point to letters on a letter board so that they can spell out their own thoughts and ideas. Eventually, students learn how to independently handwrite, type, or use their speech to communicate. RPM stands for Rapid Prompting Method.
We are different than other traditional therapies because we presume competence and intelligence in all of our students. We also work with all kinds of students, no matter their skill level, verbal ability, behaviors, or age. All students deserve to learn and communicate.
The most exciting part of my job is when I get to show parents how intelligent their child is. For some parents, this is the first time they get to hear their child’s thoughts, opinions, stories, and poems. I also enjoy empowering parents to work with their child at home.
I have been an RPM Provider for 11 years. I started working with my first client in Burleson and soon started seeing other clients throughout the metroplex. After completing my Level 1 RPM Certification, I was invited to do an internship with the creator of RPM, Soma Mukhopadhyay in Austin, where I learned so much valuable information through observation and practice. I completed my internship in 2016 and continued building my business throughout DFW. Over the years, I’ve worked with all kinds of students in Texas and around the country. I’ve learned so much from my each of my students and am very grateful for everything they have taught me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If one of my friends were visiting, I would first take them out to eat at my family’s restaurant, Fiesta Mexican Restaurant! I love being able to share my family’s delicious food and show them a huge part of my childhood. Next, I would take them to SOMA Winery, one of my favorite places to enjoy happy hour. For dinner I would take them to Mama’s, for some classic Fort Worth pizza. I love trying new restaurants, so our day would mostly be spent eating delicious food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Becky Escher of Becky Escher Design is an incredibly talented graphic designer in Fort Worth. We grew up attending the same schools and have remained good friends over the years. I have hired her for multiple projects including creating and updating my business logo. She made the process very easy and was really in tune with what I envisioned for my business. She has worked with many other local businesses in DFW and I’m always impressed by her work.
