We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Steenkamp and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, why did you pursue a creative career?
This is one of those questions that I read and was immediately drawn to give an answer. My life has always been splattered with art and different creative outlets for as long as I can remember. My mom told me that as a kid I always chose the colorful option for anything! I mean why choose a plain folder when you can have Lisa Frank rainbow-glitter dolphins to stare at during class? Why choose a plain black RAZR phone when you can get the hot pink one, am I right? With that said, I am always looking for ways to feed that creative outlet. I have a long history in photography and even ran my own photography business at one point, and I still dabble in that! When we moved back home to Texas I put my photography aside and pursued other things because building photography clientele takes a lot of time, though I still take photos ALL THE TIME, its my thing! With that said, I am always looking for new creative ideas, and that brings us to the best part, SOAP! I spent months, days, and hours fine tuning my soap recipe and learning all the “do’s and don’t’s” of “soaping”. Making soap is challenging and involves precision and can be hazardous if you are not doing it correctly and safely. So it gave me a challenge, which I love. I spent hours watching Youtube videos and fell in love with the art and beauty behind the craft and dreamed of making some of the beautiful bars I would see on social media. After I made my first batch of simple charcoal soap, a beautiful black bar that I was so proud of! I quickly dove right in and began making colorful and bright creations that reflect my personality. I always have exciting new soap ideas with cool color combos and enticing fragrances that allows for an endless creative outlet! Today it is not unusual to see rainbows and glitter in my soap kitchen because to me, there is never too much color and sparkle. Though I do like simple bars as well, I suppose it just depends on how creative I am feeling that day!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to think what sets my soap apart from others is the love and heart that I put into my product. I know that sounds cheesy, it does. But when I make my soap I truly care about the quality and properties that make my bars the best. I spend time dreaming up my next batch and each one is special in its own way. I test every batch of my soap myself to ensure that it meets the level of luxuriousness that I want my soap to have. I like uniqueness in everything I pursue and I think that shows in my soap. When you spend so much time on something, the truth is that the product speaks for itself. Sure you can buy synthetic store-bought soap that is made of detergents and is irritating to the skin, but when you try a bar of old-fashioned soap it is life-changing. Again, cheesy, I know. But it is true. My skin has never felt as good as it does now!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in rural DFW in a small town that I love with all my heart. First I’d 100% recommend they visit Greenwood Grocery & Grill in Greenwood, TX. That is where you’ll find the best burgers around! The little town is so quaint and there is so much history there. You won’t be disappointed. You can also visit on the weekends for their famous fish fry! Then I’d say that they need to go to Rooster’s Roadhouse on the square in Decatur, it has a great atmosphere and is nestled down town with beautiful views of the historical courthouse. After that you can finish off your night by stopping in to Hey Sugar right next door and grab yourself a bag of candy and goodies! My kids and family love that place!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is this wonderful man, my best friend, who I just so happen to be married to, who supports me in ALL my wild adventures. I literally told him one day, I want to make soap. He looked at me confused because unless you are a soap maker, the concept of “soaping” can sound strange. I placed an order for all my supplies and he didn’t bat an eye! If I need his man arms to pull apart wood for me, or cut something out so I can paint it, he does it and never EVER complains. He has had some hand and tons of support in every project I have ever done. My husband and children inspire me to push harder and pursue my dreams! I owe it all to them. I hope someday my kids will look back and think my mom was so cool, she was a crazy chicken, photographer, teacher, farm, and soap lady!
