We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would have to say that the most important factor behind my success, and the success of my brand is….empathy. Being an empathetic individual has allowed me to fully understand what each of my clients’ is looking for and how to better help others. This has given me the ability to build a loyal clientele, because each person leaves knowing that I have their best interest at heart and will always strive to make their experience better! Empathy led me down the path of becoming an esthetics instructor five years ago. I wanted to try and provide an even better classroom experience for all of the students than I had. And those two years as an instructor gave me some of the greatest experience I have had throughout my entire career thus far. Finally, empathy led me to start my own business! KMA Skin Clarity was created from a longing to provide each of my clients with the best treatments, using the best products, in a comfortable and relaxing setting, and at an affordable price.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
KMA Skin Clarity is a facial spa, offering European style facials, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, lash and brow tinting, waxing and natural skin care products. Unlike your typical day spa environment, your experience at KMA Skin Clarity is all about you! No waiting around in a lobby full of people, walk right through the doors of Salon Boutique and straight to suite 31, and escape for an hour or two. You get to enjoy a dimly lit room, with soft music and your favorite essential oil filling the air. Enjoy a sip of your favorite beverage and once you are ready for your treatment you get to relax on a luxurious heated bed! I am beyond proud to be able to offer relaxing, results-oriented, yet affordable treatments to everyone. Although KMA Skin Clarity has come a long way in just two years, getting to this point definitely had its ups and downs. First starting out as an esthetician is very difficult. You are trying to build a career from scratch, with no clients. It took me about 2 years of working full time at Elizabeth Arden to really start building a decent client list. Eventually I obtained my esthetics instructor license and taught for two years. Teaching at such a young age had its fair share of challenges, but I really feel that experience helped me grow exponentially as an esthetician. After teaching for two years, I felt I needed more experience in the field before I could get back into the classroom, so I began working in another day spa. It was there that I started to imagine how I would run a business…how I would do things differently. I slowly began putting together a business plan, ordering all the necessary tools and supplies, even created a website…I didn’t even know I could do that! Finally I took the leap and started my own business! There are still some days I can’t believe I ever did it, but I never regret it. All of this has taught me not to play it so safe. Each change I made in my career was scary, I wasn’t always sure…but had I not taken those risks, those leaps of faith…I wouldn’t be where I am today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
-North Italia at Legacy Hall for some amazing Italian food and cocktails -Del Frisco for a steak dinner -32 degree rooftop bar for drinks and music -I love flea market/trade markets, so Third Monday Trade Days in Mckinney is always fun -Dallas Farmers Market for fresh produce and local samplings -Strolling through Downtown Mckinney and checking out all the shops I enjoyed great food, drinks and music, checking out local small businesses and shopping around for cool antiques!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are numerous people that I have to thank for leading me to where I am in my career today. People that have supported me, and pushed me when I felt I may not be able to carry on! But I truly have to thank my brother, Brandy Anderson for convincing me to take a tour of the esthetics department at Paul Mitchell after graduating high school. He was a cosmetology instructor there at the time, and he was fully aware that I was a little lost as to what to do after high school. He got me interested in makeup and skincare and I signed up for the program right after the tour! Eight years later and I am still in a field that I love and now running my very own business…can’t ask for much more than that!
