We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Duvall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up in a large family in Dallas, TX, as the fourth of five children. I have two very wonderful parents who taught us at an early age the importance of hard work and giving back. Every aspect of my life since I was a little girl has been based around being a performer. I was always writing songs in my journal, blaring Dolly Parton or Shania Twain, and putting on shows for anyone that would listen.
My younger years were full of performing, from being the lead in the high school musical to captaining the cheerleading squad. I took a pause to go to college at the University of Texas and majored in journalism, where I really honed in on my craft of writing. Immediately after college, I went straight back to music and have had quite the journey along the way: from children’s music to my music, from New York to Nashville to the West Coast, then back to Texas, to becoming a mother and writing this new album, it’s been a long and winding road. One that has always been centered on music. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my love of music and all the fabulous places it has taken me along the way to get to where I am now.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
There are many roles women play on a daily basis, creating a need for several different faces that each resemble the role authentically. My intention is to show you all of my roles and “faces” via my mediums of Music, Motherhood and Entrepreneurship.
I am a Texas-born singer-songwriter who was raised on a foundation of country, blues, gospel, and rock ‘n’ roll. My unique approach to music has drawn comparisons to singers like Janis Joplin, Natalie Maines, and Joan Jett..
I have been in the music industry for a long while, but took a pause to have four children and provide myself a more reflective period of writing and redefining my purpose. After partnering with The Baker Brothers in 2020, I came back out with new music last year and released my first single in October of 2022.
We are about to release the third single off of the album on May 12th for Mother’s Day. It is a love song to my children and to anyone who is raising kids or has raised kids. Being a parent is the hardest but most rewarding job in the world.
My foundation, “Twice the Love Foundation,” hosted its first event in November of last year, and we raised money for a wonderful charity in Dallas, Genesis Women’s Shelter. We are currently working on some wonderful new ideas for the charity and starting to prepare for next year’s event.
And my animated children’s project is preparing to make its return! We are very excited for everyone to follow along.
Of course, there are always challenges and changes to plans, but I am very excited about what I am working on and the positive feedback I am receiving on my projects!
]I have been knocked down a few times on my journey, but the ability to dust myself off and keep pushing forward is something I am proficient at doing at this stage in my life. It is important to not sweat the small stuff and to always learn from your mistakes, but don’t let them define you. My willingness to evolve as a person, artist, and professional while still keeping a true sense of myself and my family is something that I possess and has given me the ability to keep pushing forward. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay true to you and everything will be ok!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Dallas is a very robust city full of wonderful food, incredible art, great shopping and even better people. Some of my favorite places in the city include Sunday brunch or dinner at Le Bilboquet. I would grab a drink at Georgie’s next door prior to your dinner. Owned by the same group, they both have the perfect ambiance to provide a wonderful evening.
The Mansion Bar is always a fun spot for a drink and is known for being on of our most iconic hotels. On the weekends, the have amazing music in the bar as well.
You could have a wonderful spa day at The Joule Hotel downtown. Grab your girlfriends and have a staycation there! It won’t disappoint.
You can make an afternoon of enjoying the sunshine at The Kylde Warren Park and then stop over and eat lunch on the park’s edges at Mi Cocina, one of our classic Mexican restaurants. Be sure and try the Mambo Taxi!
So many wonderful art destinations in Dallas, but the ATTPAC district is truly breathtaking. See incredible works of art at the Dallas Museum of Art, see beautiful sculpture pieces at The Nasher Sculpture Center. Catch a show at ATTPAC’s Winspear, Dallas Theater Center or the Dallas Symphony. You could take multiple days to enjoy everything that district has to offer.
If you are here in the fall, go check out the AT&T Stadium and root on the Dallas Cowboys. Whether you are an avid fan or not, the stadium is truly an experience all on its own.
Wonderful shopping and dining in Highland Park Village. Grab a drink at the Monkey Bar above Mi Cocina or lunch/dinner at The Honor Bar, shop for beautiful home accessory goods at Madison or gorgeous clothes and accessories at The Market. It is a one stop shop for a full afternoon of fun.
And if you are looking for some additional outdoor activities, The Arboretum is breathtaking and the Dallas Farmer’s Market is always fun.
This is just a small taste of what Dallas has to offer! It truly is a beautiful city and a wonderful place to raise a family or have a weekend with friends!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been very fortunate to come across some wonderful people in my journey and will be forever grateful for their guidance and support. Yet, I would say my parents are who I am most grateful to because they were my first cheerleaders, my sounding board, my logical business advice givers, and my backbone. I could not be where I am today without their love and support.
Also, I am very grateful to my producers, The Baker Brothers. They are incredibly talented, wonderful musicians, dear friends, they always have my back and are constantly pushing me to be the best version of myself.
