We had the good fortune of connecting with Cody Cresswell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cody, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
This was by far my favorite discussion question. Where I’m from has to be one the most musically talented areas in all of the DFW area, if not the whole state of Texas. Three or so years ago I never would have imagined I would be a full time gigging musician, much less be able to play a guitar. Living in Hunt County, you tend to stumble on some incredibly talented artists regardless of the bar stool you end up on. That’s exactly what happened to me. Watching the likes of Zach Romo, Colton O’Neill, Michael Summers, Kenneth Waters and Martin Antonio (to name a few) sit on bar stools at Sweetwater Grill and quite literally blow your mind with incredible vocals and an uncanny ability to perform like everything is on the line, could almost be considered inspiring. Or at least It was to me. From there, a Keith Urban infomercial guitar was bought off of my Mamaw and an addiction was born. I played till my fingers bled and after stumbling through an open mic or two hosted by some of the beforementioned artists and an opening act for the late, great Taylor Dee, I suddenly found myself sitting on the other barstool doing exactly what has turned out to be just about the only thing I’m decent at. Now I’m constantly surrounded by and encouraged by the same guys that inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place. Hunt County is a hell of a place, in good and bad ways, but this place is the reason I am who I am today and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Songwriting has become an obsession for me. It’s very rare that a day goes by and I’m not tucked away (mentally and physically) in the back room of the house trying to match chord progressions to melodies or vice versa. The great thing about being a singer songwriter is that everyone their own sound and style. It’s very rare, at least in my neck of the woods, that you’re going to find any two people that write and sound the same, so setting myself apart from others almost just naturally happens in this profession. And this profession is nothing but a grind. A grind that can be insanely fulfilling at times and then turn around and drag you through the mud. It’s never easy but I love it and plan to keep grinding until I can’t. I finally released my first single “Missin’ Home”, on February 6th of this year and plan to keep them coming.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Sweetwater Grill is always guaranteed to be a we’re going to stop at. Live music almost every night of the week and you can’t beat that in my opinion. Other than that we tend to stop by my better half’s family property quite often. It’s about as peaceful as it can get out there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Momager for sure. She goes above and beyond for me and deals with way more than she should have to. Love you Mom
And of course Peyton Michelle. I couldn’t do what it do without you darlin
