We had the good fortune of connecting with Dook Dootson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dook, why did you pursue a creative career?
I think most people don’t choose a creative career. It’s something that chooses you and seems to draw you in like a moth to the flame.

It’s baffling why anybody would choose this life. It typically doesn’t pay well, it’s long hours, it causes strain with relationships – strain even just trying to live a regular life. It’s a constant source of struggle and often requires secondary undesirable jobs to fund the pursuit. But for creative people there’s something constantly tapping on your shoulder, pushing you to build something and spread it to the world.

It’s difficult to explain why someone would feel compelled to push themselves in this way. I don’t believe it’s ego; I think most artists just have a burning desire to share what’s inside their minds, to give back to the world what others have given to them.

Should success arrive and the dream becomes reality, I’ve been told time and time again that it’s never how you had imagined it. But everyone I meet along the way always seems to share the same view – even if nothing ever comes of it, they will not stop creating. It’s hard coded in their DNA.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’re an indie rock band based in Dallas. We try to mix things up by having an array of instruments on stage – trumpets, trombones, tuba, violin, organ, hand percussion, etc. we try to make every show have a wide range of sound and really love mixing things up.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Thai food at Nalinh market, live music at six springs tavern. Beer at Manhattan project.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Tom Loffman from London, UK, He is an incredible audio engineer and close friend of the band. He has worked with the band on a lot of projects. Although we self record everything, he has helped mix our music, as well as assisting on music video shoots etc and flying all the way to Dallas to do so. He helps us to get the music out to the people.
