We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Lindsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing outsiders are likely unaware of is that ALL people, themselves and therapists included, are affected by mental health concerns. Everyone has mental health, and just like with physical health, it is not always balanced. Mental health concerns are not only these “extreme” cases you see in the media, they are also well disguised and avoided due to lack of awareness or fear of being judged and misunderstood. We all experience hardship at some point in our life that changes how we think, feel, believe, and behave; therefore, we all deserve a safe place to work through these challenges that can rob us of living our life to the fullest.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
It started while sitting next to each other in our first graduate school class. Kate and I discovered we both played volleyball, were interested in sport psychology, and wanted to be mental health therapists. As our counseling training continued, we discovered how agency policies and restrictions prevented us from providing quality care to clients and ourselves. Our desire for freedom inspired us to create The Therapy Lounge and Performance Center, PLLC where we can take our vision of combining mind and body practices to make holistic care a reality.

Our approach is unique in that we utilize our knowledge of sport and performance to enhance traditional therapy practices. Therefore, our goal is to increase client understanding of how their mind and body can guide them throughout life, even in the most distressing times.

Our education and life experiences have best prepared us to work with clients facing concerns, such as trauma, eating disorders, addictions, anxiety, depression, life transitions, burnout, and sport performance. Our specialty trainings include EMDR for trauma and CEDS for eating disorders.

To complete our holistic vision, we plan to add other service providers to our practice such as a nurse practitioner (PMHNP), physical therapist, yoga instructor, and dietician.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Due to COVID-19, a lot of our normal activities have been postponed such as going to concerts, festivals, indoor and outdoor volleyball leagues (we like Sandbar in Deep Ellum), local museums, collegiate and professional sporting events, etc. As we navigate these uncertain times, you can still find us outside playing volleyball, walking at White Rock Lake or Katy Trail, reading and chatting by the pool, grabbing some tacos from Rusty’s or Torchy’s, sandwiches from Latin Deli, or brunch (especially if they have biscuits & gravy), hanging with the animals at the zoo, shopping (we see you World Market), or watching movies/shows at home. We also love getting food and drinks at Backyard, HG Supply, Side Car, and anywhere that has board games and can handle our competitive spirit!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to shoutout the University of North Texas Counseling Department, our friends and families, and the previous jobs that inspired our mission to start our own practice.
