Meet LaConya Murray | Chief Brand Attorney at Off the Mark IP Solutions

We had the good fortune of connecting with LaConya Murray and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaConya, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I made the decision to start my own law practice in high school. I knew I wanted to work with business owners but didn’t think I would fit in the corporate environment. I believe my focus was entrepreneurship because my friend group was so talented. I could see them using their talents to run their own business. I niched to assisting business owners protect their brand and content through trademarks, copyrights, and contracts because African American creators have a history of being taken advantage of in these areas. I realized early on this was mainly due to a lack of knowledge on what intellectual property is and the value it has. This is why education plays a huge role in our business model. In order to make an informed decision, you have to understand the basics.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started the Murray Law Group, LLC in 2012 as a threshold law firm. If it walked over the threshold I would take the case. Criminal, disability, family law, dependency, it didn’t matter. It was draining for two reasons, 1. there was so much different information to keep up with, and 2. I wasn’t fulfilling my purpose. In 2014 I began doing business as Off the Mark IP Solutions where we provide trademark, copyright, contract, and business development solutions for small business owners.

Entrepreneurship isn’t easy however technology has made my journey a lot easier. The Internet and social media allowed me to reach clients all over the United States for little to no money where traditionally it would cost thousands of dollars to be in front of that same audience. That was seven years ago. Today we’ve served hundreds of clients doing exactly what we love. The biggest lesson that I’ve learned along the way is when you go into business you have to know who you want to serve and how you can help them. Your business is really is about serving others you can’t be the hero of the story.

We are extremely proud to help our clients on their journey to create legacies for their families. Many business owners understand the value of having an attorney on their team however 36 to 53 percent of small businesses are sued every year because they are not legally protected.
