We had the good fortune of connecting with Lyle Adair and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lyle, what are you most proud of in terms of your business?
Building a copper art business has been a slow steady process. It has been challenging at times but the rewards greatly outweigh any encumbrances. The feeling I get at the end of a project when I can stand back and see the finished result is amazing and something I struggle to put into words. The joy someone has when they purchase one of my creations means so much to me and the validation as an artist is priceless. Every time I see my business in print whether online or in newsletters, newspapers, or other publications puts a smile on my face. I am most proud that I can take an idea and replicate it into a copper work of art that others find valuable and will enjoy for years to come.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What keeps me busy professionally is constantly being on the lookout for new venues to showcase my art. Part of what keeps any business going is marketing and art is no different. I’m a member of several organizations that post opportunities as well as several online lists that post calls for entry. I am regularly submitting for new shows and meeting gallery owners whenever possible. Of course, my passion is creating art in my studio and that’s where I devote the lion’s share of my energy. I like representing ideas in the copper projects I create so I like to think ahead to the next piece and what it will represent. In addition, I’ll sketch ideas on a notepad for future reference. Some I use immediately and others I have to flesh out over time before I’m able to use them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Austin is full of interesting places and always has lots going on. If someone were visiting, I’d take them for a swim in Barton Springs and a hike along the greenbelt. The bats flying out from under the bridge at Lady Bird Lake is fun to see in the evenings. So many awesome food trucks have popped up all over town and there are several notable breweries to visit, such as ABGB and St. Elmo Brewing. We might catch some live music at Stubbs or Antone’s. A lot of great art galleries offer fun exploring such as Link & Pin Art Space and Art For The People.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe my success to many different people and organizations. Of those that stand out most is my family for allowing me the time and energy to spend hours on end uninterrupted in my studio. Also, I’m grateful to the Creative Arts Society for all the opportunities to show that they provide and to the Texas Society of Sculptors who helped me when I first began to showcase my art.
