We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaclyn Lawless and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaclyn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
It’s impossible to follow your creative instincts without pushing some boundaries, or making yourself vulnerable in one way or another. A lot of people get caught up over analyzing, stuck in fear and hesitation. I should know, I used to be one of them. What if people don’t like what I create? I didn’t go to art school, who am I to suddenly call myself an artist? Eventually, you have to decide that it’s worth the risk. For me, living an authentic life is worth all of the rejection and struggle I’ve faced along the way. There will inevitably be failures and missteps, but I have never regretted putting myself out there and going after what I want.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Believe it or not, Lawless Craft was created in 2020, barely a year ago! When COVID-19 hit Texas, my family of 5 was locked down indefinitely, just like everyone else. Anxious and bored, I started making small batches of soap and candles to enjoy at home, mostly to keep myself busy. I shared my products with family and friends, and eventually got into working with other materials like clay and concrete. Last summer, I turned my little side hobbies into an official LLC. Since then, I launched an Etsy shop and shipped products to 35 states! I have also participated in local market events in DFW and offered my products at a few shops, including Mosaic Makers Collective. It’s been quite a year! More than anything, I’m honored to donate a significant amount of proceeds to local nonprofits. 20% of all 2020 sales supported Mission Arlington and Metroplex Women’s Clinic. I also offer discounts to educators and frontline workers. I believe that we should all use our skills to impact our communities. Every step in that direction makes a difference!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re new to the DFW area, I would recommend a day of museum hopping! Starting with The Kimbell and The Modern of Fort Worth, then onto The Dallas Museum of Art. Both cities also offer the most stunning botanical gardens. Rent a bike and explore the Trinity River trails. After taking in all the sights, I’d recommend dinner in the gardens at Joe T. Garcia’s, a local staple. Nothing but the best!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Early on in my creative journey, I was fortunate enough to join a team of local female crafters at Mosaic Makers Collective. Mosaic is a shop based in Dallas that features handmade goods from women all over Texas. I was deeply flattered that they wanted to sell my products! More than that, it’s been a supportive and loving sisterhood for me and many other artists. Starting a business is challenging and at times, very isolating. It’s been a joy to share the highs and lows of this journey with other women. In an industry that can be so competitive, I have found nothing but encouragement and empathy at Mosaic. It has been such a gift to meet other creatives who are willing to work together and genuinely lift each other.
