We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
To definitely go for it!!! The sky is truly the limit and we mostly place limitations on ourselves but when we make up in our minds that this is something that we want to do and we dedicate our time and energy doing it then the universe has a way of making it happen. I’ve never been afraid of failure because throughout any journey if you pay attention then you will grow. So it’s so much better to start over with experience now. I once heard the amazing actor Will Smith say that whenever you fail you should always fail forward and that stuck with me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career was kind of all over. My first initial job when I was 14 was at the department store Marshalls. Then I worked at a nursing home, I did customer service, pharmacy, medical claims, provider relations, and my last title that I held under someone’s else structure was “Physician Contracting” and I did that for TRICARE which is the insurance for the military so my career was all over. One of the things that set me apart was my work ethic. I felt like I’ve always been a great worker but I was just one to bend the rules and somewhat get away with it. I think working in any job as a black man can always be tough for many. Many times we have to go in and really turn off who we are as people and turn on someone else in order to be accepted at these jobs. One of the things I can say that I’m most proud of is that as a black man I was able to be in leadership throughout my career and me having a Masters in Organizational Management helped throughout my career. But just as a black man in general to have those type of achievements when we once were not allowed education makes me proud.
Different lessons I’ve learned along the way is to keep learning. There is so much information out to seek but you have to seek it in order to get it. Some of my main lessons that I’ve learned throughout my journey comes from this book that I read called “The Four Agreements” by Don Ruiz which states that you should never assume, never take anything personal, be impeccable with your word and always do your best!
My brand speaks to so many different things and people. Melanin is a pigmentation that we have in our skin so when you drink Melanated Beans it’s a representation of yourself. Our mission is to provide a “Taste of Melanin” one bean at a time, one shade at a time. With quality presented to our customers one day at a time”!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Funny question as my bestfriend just came down for almost 2 months. I’m a pretty open person so I just kind of go with the flow of things but pertaining food whatever he had a taste for that’s what we would eat. It’s been kind of hard for me to hang out as most of the time I feel like I haven’t made it to my personal goal, so until I’m there hanging out doesn’t interest me that much. My goal is to build an EMPIRE so I don’t think hanging out will get me to that goal but only at the moment. I’m in my sacrifice stage!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The first person of course would be my mother as she has sacrificed so much for me throughout my life. I wouldn’t be any of who I am if it wasn’t for her support and love. Secondly I would like to thank my cousin who I call my twin as she was the first person who ever seen something else in me that I didn’t see myself. She was the first person to even put the entrepreneur bug in my ear and seeing her do it successful for so long was an example in my face that it could be done. The support has been good from so many angels so I definitely want to thank literally everyone who has supported me.
