We had the good fortune of connecting with JB McGinnis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JB, can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m the owner of JBM Seminars and a 25 year financial literacy expert, having conducted over 300 seminars.

I’m a retired Army Engineer Officer and spent 25 years in the military. Years ago, one of my Soldiers sought my advice with some financial issues. After doing some research I gave the Soldier sound financial advice and quickly became the financial guru in the unit. After assisting several other Soldiers I was encouraged to start my financial literacy business.

During my seminars, I focus on things that have nothing to do with money but have everything to do with money…let me explain. I strongly encourage everyone to develop a life plan which consists of your Health, Finances, Career, Family and Spiritual Guidance.

Let’s talk about your health plan: You should know your optimal weight, blood pressure, cholesterol level and your blood sugar level at a minimum. You should be at your doctor’s recommended levels and have a plan to maintain those levels or a plan to achieve those levels. This plan must be active and deliberate.

This health plan has nothing to do with money, but has everything to do with money. Not focusing on your health could cost you thousands of dollars and ultimately your life. Discuss your health plan with your doctor at your next visit.

Using the same techniques I teach through my seminars, I was able to achieve financial independence and retire at the age of 44. I now do what I love to do, which is educate my community. You can learn these techniques and tips on exactly how I was able to pull this off in my upcoming book, Mindset First Money Second: 30 Things I Did to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck, due to be released this fall.

Do you have a budget?
Being a Financial Literacy Expert I feel a budget is one of the very first steps to achieving financial success. Did you know your spending decisions should be a direct reflection of your budget? I recommend you spend no more than 30% of your take home pay for your housing cost, 15% on transportation and always save 20% for yourself. Having a nest egg is more important than any debt so make saving a priority.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a foodie so I would take them to small food spots throughout the city. Chef’s Point in Watauga is a great spot for 5 star food! TRUE Kitchen + Kocktails in Dallas is an excellent spot. What’s Clucking is a Chicago inspired chicken joint in Plano. Tex’s Star Grill in Watauga is another place that has really good Chicago food and well. ITSO Vegan in Grand Prairie is very good vegan food. Lastly, try Tacos Azteca in Grand Prairie. They have excellent Mexican food.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This is a tough one because there have been so many people that have been instrumental to my success. Of course my family has been there for me and provided support when needed. I was a single parent for many years and that really helped me prioritize and focus. I tell my daughter often that she made me a better man. I’m a retired Army Engineer Officer, so the military instilled discipline in me and provided structure to my life. My smart and beautiful wife Mel keeps me grounded and encourages my every endeavor. I’m a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. My fraternity brothers provide that bond and leadership that I need. Shout out to the NUPES!
