We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Cairns and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Big risks can have big payoffs, but the uncertainty is scary. I took a huge risk 3 years ago, leaving a job that I really loved to pursue opening my own private practice. I left behind friends, mentors, financial stability, and job security for an idea of something that could be. It was a risk, but it turned out to be the exact right choice! Starting my own practice has been one of the most rewarding steps of my life. I am so thankful that I took the risk – If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be where I am now, in what I would consider my “dream job.”Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a therapist, I have a specific niche and I think that’s really important in being “set apart” from the hundreds of other therapists in Dallas. I really specialize in working with college age and young adult clients who are struggling with eating disorders, disordered eating, and/or body image concerns. My past experience working in a treatment center has developed a confidence in working with clients outpatient- I’ve seen and heard a lot, and I’m not easily surprised. It took a lot of long days, hard work, and to be honest, some personal work on my own setting boundaries, people pleasing, and desire for affirmation and approval. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love being outside, so a lot of our activities would center around being outdoors! We’d definitely go to the Dallas Arboretum, and check out the Dallas Farmers Market one day. My family and I moved north last year, so currently I spend a lot of time at the McKinney Town Square. They have the BEST farm-to-table restaurants, cute boutiques, and home stores. I could easily spend 2 days just walking around, shopping, and eating! We now live on 2 acres, and on clear nights, we can see a million stars. I love sitting on the back porch in the evenings and just talking and hanging out with friends and family. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jenni Schaefer is an author and a speaker, and was so helpful for me when I was first learning about eating disorders. Her books are so quick and easy to read, and I often recommend them to clients. And I’ve gotten to meet her in person a few times, and she’s just as relatable and easy to talk to in person!
