Meet Jordan Henderson: Lead Vocalist/Lyricist The High Moons

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My sister and I have a bond through music, especially since we are 11 years apart. I was going through a divorce and a custody battle when I wrote my first song, I sent the lyrics to Hannah and said, “hey can you write some guitar music to this?”. The rest is history. That became the spark that lead to The High Moons. Now we are a full band with our other sister Eden on bass and an incredible drummer named James. Music is an outlet for many, I am no different. I have written my triumphs, my fears, my love, my hurts, my regrets and my pain in every song I’ve written. When I sing our originals, I mean them. Every word is from something real that has happened to myself or someone I love. Music is my outlet and helps me cope with things as well as helps me remember the good times.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been fortunate to make music with my sister Hannah for years now and as of 2019 our other sister Eden joined as a bassist. This is rad as I am the eldest and have shared a love for music with them. It stems from our dad. Hannah and I started doing open mics and it just kind of evolved. Every gig we have gotten, every nomination and award has all been from word of mouth of people hearing us and being like “hey, yall gotta play at our bar”. We have done many features for a variety of artists, rap, hip hop, ska/punk, funk, indie/folk, it has all been a blast. We are always like “oh you like us? How did you even find out about us?”, we kind of forget we are decent at music. The community has been good to us and we are thankful for every show we have played because it really is just a hobby that we love doing. We have had a lot of members come and go, a percussionist, another drummer, a cellist and a keyboardist. We love them each so much and they all brought an amazing element to our music, but it has been challenging having to re teach everything and change songs for the new members. Hopefully with the sister band thing we are solid now. We have definitely learned a respect for the industry, even local music, there is so much hard work, money and passion that goes into playing shows, not to mention making merch, EPs etc. There is so much talent and it can seem like you’re just a drop of water in the ocean, but loving music should be reward enough.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would go to deep ellum. Probably start at the Freeman Cajun Cafe for music and food, we would take as troll thorugh deep ellum and bar hop, Adairs is classic, Braindead for good brews, and Emporium Pies for dank pies. High and Tight is a must with their speakeasy feel, for brunch we would head to Oak Cliff, Bishop Arts and brunch at Oddfellows. Cretias Eatery would be the afternoon pick me up with coffee and cake. We would look for local shows like The Effinays, Loyal Sally, hit up the Freeman’s Sunday night blues jam and just follow the music.

Jason Rudd has been a guiding light to us since the beginning.
