Meet Carly Tate | Singer-songwriter & Guitarist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carly Tate and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carly, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I think that risk is absolutely necessary for growth. It’s so beneficial to push yourself outside of your known capabilities to find improvement, whether that be in your technical playing, live performance, etc.. I wouldn’t be at the point that I am at today had I never took a risk and played at that first open mic. So yes, risk is such an important factor in finding success in whatever it is you do.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I began writing songs at the age of 13, and in trying to channel the likes of blues guitarists like John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well as R&B influenced vocalists like Tori Kelly, I was able to lay the groundwork pretty early on in my musical career for what would eventually become my identifiable sound. I am most proud of myself in that I was able to take my favorite musical styles and blend them into something that I can call my own, and something that people seem to really enjoy as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve only been living in DFW for about a year, but I already have so many wonderful places in mind that I’d love to show someone not familiar with the area. Coffee is such an important part of my day, so I’d make sure to visit a different coffee shop every morning. I love places that are unsuspecting, so I’d make sure to take them to Well Grounded Coffee at White Rock. They have the friendliest barista’s and cozy mismatched farmhouse styled furniture- and on some Saturday mornings, a lovely gentleman serenades the cafe with old country tunes. I would also love to take them to Opening Bell Coffee on a Saturday afternoon to catch Dallas’s longest running open mic. We would make sure to catch a lot of local live music- my favorite spot being the Balcony Club. We would go on a Tuesday night for their blues night and Wednesday night for their jazz jam. We would also visit lower Greenville and check out the Labyrinth- known as “Dallas Oldest Witch Shop”. It’s a neat little shop where the friendliest cat you ever met likes to greet you for pets outside the front door. My favorite cuisine is Indian, so we would have to visit my favorite Indian spot in DFW. We would go to Kalachandji’s, a hidden gem of a restaurant located inside a temple, for some authentic vegetarian Indian food with the cutest garden courtyard seating.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to those in my life that believed in me. They provided encouragement in the times it was really needed and helped inspire me to pursue my love of music. Special shoutout to my sister Morgan, my mom and dad, the Cissell family and the Richardson family, and all the new friends I’ve made in the Dallas music scene.
