Meet Julie Patterson | Owner of Wish Upon A Cookie

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a mother of five, my children are my primary focus. Starting my own business has given me the flexibility to meet my family’s needs. About a year after I began exploring the idea of turning my passion for baking into a small business, my youngest son was diagnosed with Autism. He has since become a significant source of inspiration and motivation for my business goals. One of my biggest aspirations is to create a role for him within my business, giving him the opportunity to work, create, and be part of something meaningful and special.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the proud owner of a locally-owned small business, wholeheartedly dedicated to reviving and sharing the cherished magic of Grandma’s homemade cookies. Those sugar cookies were undoubtedly the radiant highlight of my childhood, arriving annually in a special tin during Christmas. The simple act of receiving that gift held an undeniable, heartwarming significance; I could always sense my Grandma’s loving heart imprinted in each delectable cookie. It is this very essence I aspire to replicate and share with every single one of my customers!
Embarking on the journey of building a business, I understand, requires a considerable investment of time, unwavering patience, and an abundance of sustained energy. It’s certainly not a feat that materializes overnight. While I wouldn’t characterize the process as exceptionally difficult, I would describe it as a slow and steady ascent, one exquisitely decorated cookie at a time. Initially, my primary marketing strategy relied heavily on the power of word-of-mouth recommendations. Gradually, as more and more customers reached out, my social media presence expanded, and word of my small business, Wish Upon A Cookie, began to spread within local business circles.
Then, in 2022, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with breast cancer, necessitating a pause in my business operations. I harbored some uncertainty about whether or how my business would recover after my absence. However, something truly remarkable and heartwarming unfolded! My loyal customers not only patiently awaited my return but also demonstrated unwavering support and care throughout my treatments and surgeries, exceeding any expectations I could have possibly imagined. And when the time finally came for me to resume where I had left off, my business experienced an unprecedented surge in growth, as if my cherished customers had thoughtfully brought along their entire networks of friends and family.
The cookies I craft and design are meticulously created in an atmosphere brimming with love, with my heart poured into each and every order. My deepest desire is to ensure that these sweet, delectable treats add that perfect, unforgettable pinch of something special to my customers’ celebrations and events.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Dallas-Fort Worth area is full of exciting places to explore and incredible restaurants to try! As a coffee lover, I’m always on the hunt for cozy, small-town-style coffee shops. One of my favorites is White Rock Coffee—it’s the perfect spot to start the day before taking a scenic stroll around White Rock Lake. I’m especially looking forward to taking a coffee class the next time my best friend visits!
When family and friends come to town, I love showing them around Dallas. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens are a must-see, and a visit to the Dallas Museum of Art is always a joy. The Perot Museum never fails to impress with its hands-on exhibits, life-sized science experiments, and sense of wonder—it’s truly fun for all ages.
For those who enjoy a bit of an eclectic vibe, the Bishop Arts District is a favorite. The quirky shops, unique restaurants, and regular live music on the corners make it the perfect place for a fun night out. You can even enjoy a cigar at a local lounge if you’re in the mood.
And for my fellow Dallas Cowboys fans, The Star in Frisco is a highlight. With a wide variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and dessert spots, it’s easy to spend an entire day there. Afterward, you can head to the mini practice field outside the stadium to toss around a football and snap some great photos!
These are just a few of my favorite spots around DFW—there’s always something new to discover!
