Meet Carlton Young | Growth Development Strategist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlton Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlton, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Honestly, I keep moving because I don’t see my life as my own. I see it as a calling. I’ve survived three near-death experiences that should’ve taken me out: two near fatal car accidents and then being shot at point-blank range at 24. Those weren’t just accidents; they were divine interruptions clear reminders that God kept me here for a reason.
That kind of preservation shifts your perspective. I move forward not just for me, but for the man silently struggling to find his footing, the young leader craving direction, and the father trying to break generational cycles. My pain became the blueprint for my purpose.
I also do it to leave a legacy a blueprint for my children and for anyone who finds strength in my story. I want them to know that even when life hits hard, faith, discipline, and resilience can carry you through. My hope is that everything I build Mindset U, “The Genesis” podcast, my speaking, coaching, and teaching becomes a roadmap that others can follow and begin healing, growing, and leading within their communities.
So how do I keep going? I remember the tombs He called me out of. And I refuse to let comfort, fear, or pressure send me back. I strive to lead with vision, live with intention, and lean on the One who kept me alive not just to survive, but to build something others can use as a cautionary tale and a masterclass of what not to do in life.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mindset U and 8020 Nation are more than brands they are purpose and assignment projects. Both were born out of pain, purpose, and a clear calling to help men and organizations grow through intentional leadership, mindset transformation, and spiritual alignment. What sets us apart is our commitment to real, deep internal work: we don’t just motivate we help start the transformation process, we empower and equip companies, and people with practical skills to change the trajectory of their life thru Christ.
This journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve overcome near-death experiences, identity struggles, and silent seasons where all I had was faith. But every challenge has refined the message I carry today.
I’m most proud of building platforms that help people rise not just in skill, but in purpose. I want the world to know this: your past doesn’t disqualify you it prepares you. 8020 Nation and Mindset U exist to remind people that they still have more in them and we’re here to help them unlock it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Haha, honestly, I’m probably boring in some people’s eyes but we’d have a great time in my book! If my best friend was visiting for a week, we would keep it simple and intentional. First, we’d start each day with a good workout at a solid gym or maybe even hit a trail to get some fresh air and clear our minds. That’s just how I reset and refocus.
From there, we would jump into some personal development. Then we’d definitely spend a day at Top Golf can’t beat the mix of competition, conversation, and a laid-back vibe. Throughout the week, we’d go on a little mission to find some good food spots maybe a few underrated local gems and a couple of classic go-to spots. I’m all about those relaxing and slow motion, quality convos over a good meal.
We’d keep the schedule flexible maybe catch a game if there’s one in town or kick back and talk life, purpose, and vision. It wouldn’t be flashy, but it’d be full of laughs, meaningful convos, and good energy. That’s my kind of trip.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I have to shout out “God” none of this is possible without His grace, guidance, and the second chances He’s given me time and time again. Every step I take is a reflection of His hand on my life.
I also want to honor my mom, Elizabeth Young, who made me write book reports when she didn’t know what else to do with me because I got into so much trouble, lol. At the time, I didn’t realize she was planting seeds of discipline and vision, but today I’m grateful those reports helped shape my voice.
To my wife and children thank you for your love, patience, and for being my daily reminder of what matters most. You ground me, stretch me, and fuel everything I do.
To my brother, RJ Johnson, thank you for being a visionary and speaking life into me when I needed it most. You’ve always seen more in me than I saw in myself, and your encouragement still echoes in everything I build.
I also want to shout out the men of “Mindset U” those who trust me to lead with integrity, character, and purpose. Your willingness to grow, be vulnerable, and show up has sharpened me as a man and a leader.
I want to give a special shoutout to Next Level Speakers Academy and Daniel’s Den, a transformative community curated by Dr. Dharius Daniels. These communities have stretched me, challenged me, and provided the framework I now use to make a Godly impact in the marketplace.
And finally, to “every person who ever spoke life into me,” even before I fully believed in myself thank you. Your words watered the gift in me and gave me the courage to keep going.
This journey isn’t one I walk alone, and I’m grateful for every voice, every prayer, and every push along the way.
