We had the good fortune of connecting with Melanie Valadez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I first started my business I started to have second thoughts about what I was gonna get myself into, I am involved in school a lot, my schedule is always packed 24/7 but I’ve always wanted to do a side thing because I think it’s beautiful that we can be so creative and show it off. Having to commit to this business takes a bit for me personally, but I’m up for the challenge.

What should our readers know about your business?

Originally my business name was supposed to say ‘Cosmos’. Cosmos are my birth flower and I felt like having it as my business name would make it unique and credits to my sister for helping me make the name.
My small business started about a month ago or less. What would make me slightly different from other florist is that I offer different types of flowers (ribbon,paper,real) and I am open to any type of arrangements even if they can be a challenge or different from anything I have ever done. I have learned many new things along the way, my technique wasn’t the best to begin with but I’ve learned after practicing and playing around with flowers. I have also learned that it is important to take others advice even if they aren’t in the florist industry, it’s always best to take others comments into consideration.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The area I live in doesn’t have many interesting things but I would for sure take my friend to my favorite diner, Black Bear Diner, I love their bacon. Next we would go to a garden and/or museum. For lunch I would take them to a beautiful small cafe. lastly to end the night, we would go to a carnival, carnivals are much more memorable at night with all the pretty lights all around.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my mother for helping me and encouraging this small business that I am starting. If it wasn’t for her my work wouldn’t look as beautiful as it now. I would also like to shoutout my cousin Sebastian, we recently started to work together with making this business grow even more. He makes our enternal flowers.
I wanna thank all my family members that have ordered from me, they truly gave me encouragement that I can grow out of my comfort zone. Thank you to my friends that encouraged me to start this.
